  2. Pest Control • Pest- any organism that occurs where you don’t want it or in large enough numbers to cause damage. • Pesticides- pest killers

  4. Problems with pesticides • Heath concerns (cancer, immediate toxicity) • Pollution (remember DDT?) • Persistence (amount of time before it breaks down naturally) • Resistance – pesticide does not kill the intended pest anymore • Cockroaches are immune to many pesticides

  5. Biological Pest control • Predators & Pathogens • Pathogens cause disease in the pest – Bacillus Thuringiensis • Plant Defenses • Crossbred for tougher skin, etc. • Chemicals from plants • Chrysanthemums make pyrethrins which are a natural pesticide • Disrupt breeding patterns • Pheromones confuse males and disrupt mating
