  2. Protect the Truth

  3. OUTLINE 1.0  Understanding our Jewish Roots October 15 Worship --Lamb 1.1  History 1.1.1 Grafted In 1.1.1.1 Shema/Hatikva 1.1.1.2 Symbols of remembrance 1.1.1.3 Video on Israel’s foundation

  4. What is Grafted In? • This sign has been discovered, in recent years, on pottery in the Jerusalem area, believed to date from the 2nd century BC. Some experts have concluded that it was an identifying mark of the early Jewish believers in Yeshua (Jesus) that tied together their traditions and their faith.

  5. The Symbols • The Menorah • The national symbol of the nation of Israel. Became the symbol about 200 years before Christ. • It is most often seen during the celebration of Hannakah!

  6. The Symbols • The Fish • One of the earliest symbols of Christianity. Why? • The Word fish in Greek is ICTHUS • Iesous • Christos • Theos • Huios • Sotare

  7. The Symbols • The Star of David • A later symbol to identify a Jew and their synagogues. • It has become the symbol for Jews around the world.

  8. Grafted In • Rom. 11:13 I am talking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I make much of my ministry 14 in the hope that I may somehow arouse my own people to envy and save some of them. 15 For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? 16 If the part of the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, then the whole batch is holy; if the root is holy, so are the branches.

  9. Grafted In • Rom. 11:17 If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root, 18 do not boast over those branches. If you do, consider this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you.

  10. Grafted In • Rom. 11:19 You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.” 20 Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but be afraid. 21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.

  11. Grafted In • Rom. 11:22 Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off. 23 And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.

  12. Grafted In • Rom. 11:24 After all, if you were cut out of an olive tree that is wild by nature, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!

  13. The Purpose for This Series: • 1. To understand our heritage as Christians. • 2. To appreciate the Old Testament and the laws, holidays and structure that God gave His people.

  14. The Purpose for This Series: • 3. To blend the richness and prophecy of the Old Testament with the beauty and fulfillment of the New Testament.

  15. Why Does Paul Speak to the Gentiles? • 1. It is his calling from God.Rom. 11:13 I am talking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I make much of my ministry. • 2. To arouse the Jews to envy and draw them to Jesus Christ.Rom. 11:14 in the hope that I may somehow arouse my own people to envy and save some of them.

  16. Why Does Paul Speak to the Gentiles? • 3. To see the world changed through the Jews and through their acceptance of their Messiah.Rom. 11:15 For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?

  17. The Transition - 16 • Rom. 11:16 If the part of the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, then the whole batch is holy; if the root is holy, so are the branches. • If the SOURCE is holy, the remainder is holy as well. • The Firstfruits --Ex. 34:26 “Bring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the LORD your God.

  18. The Grafting (17-21) • Rom. 11:17 If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root,

  19. The Grafting (17-21) • The Olive Tree throughout Scripture is IsraelJer. 11:16 The LORD called you a thriving olive tree with fruit beautiful in form. But with the roar of a mighty storm he will set it on fire, and its branches will be broken.

  20. The Grafting (17-21) • The Root is God (or Messiah).Is. 11:10 In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his place of rest will be glorious.Rev. 22:16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.”

  21. The Grafting • Some branches have been broken off. (unbelieving Jews)Rom. 11:17 If some of the branches have been broken off, . . .

  22. The Grafting • Some branches have been grafted in and are now receiving all of the “nutrients” (or blessings) of the tree.Rom. 11:17 . . .and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root,

  23. The Grafting • If you are a Gentile who has been grafted in . . . • -- Don’t boast it wasn’t your goodness that got you there. • -- The other branches were broken off because of unbelief.

  24. The Grafting • If you are a Gentile who has been grafted in . . . • -- If you fail to believe you could be cut off too!

  25. The Kindness and Sternness of God (22-23) • Rom. 11:22 . . . Otherwise, you also will be cut off. 23 And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. • The Jews: Some have been cut off but could be grafted in again. • The Gentiles: Some have been grafted in but could be cut off!

  26. The Key Verse • Rom. 11:24 After all, if you were cut out of an olive tree that is wild by nature, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!

  27. The Love of God • The Gentiles are “wild” branches.

  28. The Love of God • “Contrary to nature” – A farmer would always take a WILD olive stump and graft DOMESTICATED branches into it. It was the best of both worlds.

  29. The Love of God • God loves us so much that He has taken a DOMESTICATED olive stump (Israel) and grafted WILD branches (Gentiles) into it.

  30. The Love of God • God loves His chosen people so much that they will someday be grafted in again and will produce great fruit.

  31. What We Should Know . . . • 1.Christianity is rooted in Judaism. Our Savior is a Jew! • 2. We need to understand Jewish culture and tradition if we want to more completely understand our faith.

  32. Our Pledges • Trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ for strength,I promise Him that I will strive to do whatever He would have me do;I will make it the rule of my life to pray and to read the Bible every day;I will support the work and worship of my church in every way possible;I will seek to bring others to Christ; And so far as I know how, I will endeavor to lead a Christian life.

  33. Our Pledges • I pledge allegiance to the Christian Flag and to the Savior for whose Kingdom it stands. One Savior, crucified, risen, and coming again with life and liberty to all who believe.

  34. What Would Be Your Daily Pledge? • Donald Grey Barnhouse -- every morning would get out of bed and sing “When Morning Gilds the Skies.” • Others - Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength and my redeemer. Psalm 19:14

  35. The Words of Jesus • Mark 12:28 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” • Mark 12:29 “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’

  36. For the Jews . . . • There is one prayer or pledge that is said every morning and every evening: • Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one!

  37. The Pledge – (The Shema) • Sh'ma Yisrael Yehovah Elohaynu Yehovah Echad. • Sh'ma Yisrael Adonai Elohaynu Adonai Echad.

  38. The Pledge – (The Shema) • Sh'ma Yisrael Adonai Elohaynu Adonai Echad. • Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one!

  39. Deuteronomy 6:4-9 • Leader: Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. • People: Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. • Leader: These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.

  40. The Scripture • Deut. 6:1 These are the commands, decrees and laws the LORD your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the LORD your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.

  41. The Scripture • Deut. 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.

  42. The Pledge – (The Shema) • Deut. 6:4   "Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! (NASB)

  43. The Pledge – (The Shema) Sh'ma Yisrael Adonai Elohaynu Adonai Echad. Hear, Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One. In an undertone: Barukh Shem k'vod malkhuto l'olam va-ed Blessed be the Name of His glorious kingdom for ever and ever

  44. Importance of Shema – • Shema (Heb., “hear”). Title of the fundamental, monotheistic statement of Judaism, found in Deut. 6:4 (shema Yisrael YHWH elohenu YHWH ehad). This statement avers the unity of God, and is recited daily in the liturgy and customarily before sleep at night. This proclamation also climaxes special liturgies (like Yom Kippur), and is central to the confession before death and the ritual of martyrdom. The Shema is inscribed on the mezuzah and the tefillin. In public services, it is recited in unison.

  45. The Pledge • “Hear” – LISTEN!!! (Attention!) • “The Lord is Our God” – the word GOD is PLURAL! • “The Lord is One” – the word ONE is “UNITED.”Gen. 2:24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

  46. The Progressive Passion • Deut. 6: 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. • -- Love the Lord your God – stated 10 times in Deuteronomy and NOWHERE else in the Books of Moses.

  47. The Progressive Passion • Deut. 6: 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. • -- With all your heart – it has to be your DESIRE (intrinsic) • WILL -Power vs. WANT -Power

  48. The Heart • “Be careful what you set your heart on, for it might come true!” • “Love God, then do as you please.” – Augustine

  49. Some Questions to Consider • 1. What is your PLEDGE? (The first thing you think about in the morning and the last before going to sleep at night?)
