  3. I. State Legislative • General Assembly – Bicameral • Senate (upper house) • 50 members • Serve 2 years • Presiding Officers Lt. Governor, President Pro Tempore • House of Representatives (lower house) • 120 members • Serve 2 years • Presiding Officer Speaker of the House

State Executive • Governor • Qualifications • 30 years old • Be a citizen for 5 years • Serve 4 year term, 2 consecutive terms • Main Responsibilities • Commander in Chief of State Militia • Execute state laws (carry out) • Budget • Last Gov. to get veto power/ gives more influence and makes the governor and Gen. Assembly have to work together. Exec. And Leg. Branch have to cooperate

Local Legislative • Onslow County Commissioners • 5 members • Elected to 4 year terms • Adopted county budget • Set county property tax rate (main source of income) • Set county policies • Adopt county ordinances • Plan for county growth & development • Appoint County manager (Appoint Co. Local Executive • Onslow County • County Manager • Responsible for day to day affairs of county (report to county commissioners) • Oversee & coordinate county activities • Serves as budget officer • Appointed by county commissioners • County Departments (9 of 27) agriculture, board of elections, economic development, health department, building inspections, parks & rec., sheriff, social services, tax administration Onslow County Manager

  15. Onslow County Court Houses Old Court House 1904 New Court House The Summersill Building 1978 courtrooms, the Clerk of Court's offices, and the Trial Court Administrator's office, both the Register of Deeds office and the county Law Library are located within the court buildings.
