  3. Why do people use Social Networking Sites? • Find old or new friends • Romance • Search for jobs • Social Group finding • Sell merchandise • Kill time

  4. List of Social Networking Sites • Facebook • Myspace • Twitter • Imeem • Flickr

  5. Facebook • Founded by a Harvard Student in 2004 • Successful on campus & became popular in Ivy League schools • Profile can be viewed by anyone within the same network • Information, Status, Friends, Friends in Other Networks, Photos, Notes, Groups, and The Wall

  6. Founded in 2003 by Tom Anderson and Chris DeWolfe • MySpace profile typically includes a digital photo and in-depth information about personal interests • Posting multimedia can find you jobs • Metro station, ColbieCaillat, Taylor Swift & Lilly Allen

  7. Cross between blogging and texting. • Post very short messages about what you're doing at each moment • Friends are known as ”Followers” • Famous among celebrities

  8. Founded by Yahoo! Go 2.0 in 2005 • Photo sharing site, where you upload pictures, comment, rate and interact with people • Mainly used by photographers • Help find jobs as photographer

  10. Concerns about social networking • Identity theft • Attract child predators • Distraction • Disconnected from reality • Social isolation • Break career

  12. Real Life Experiences • Micheal Guinn got expelled from a Christian university upon finding out that he was gay through facebook. • A friend made a fake hi5 page with pictures saved from facebook. • 2 men were arrested after using MySpace as bait to contact youths & later raped them.

  13. Embrace it not Ban it • “But it is tough. “We have a Facebook page,” said one official of the Department of Homeland Security. “But we don’t allow people to look at Facebook in the office. So we have to go home to use it. I find this bizarre.” • It is not as dangerous as we think it is • Just post necessary information • Be careful what you post online • Post appropriate photos
