  1. Vocabulary word 1 1. intangible adj.: difficult to define; vague • Mrs. Bird’s instructions were so intangible the students had no idea what they were supposed to do for homework. Character is an intangible quality, but everyone knows when they meet someone who has it!

  2. 2. undulations n.: wavelike motions • The undulating motions of the boat rocked Bob to sleep.

  3. 3. protruding v.: used as adj.: sticking out • Raheen’s protruding feet, tripped Ms. Bird as she walked by.

  4. solidity n..: firmness; solidness The solidity of dry land was a great comfort to those pulled from the capsized boat.

  5. imperative adj.: absolutely necessary; compulsory • In figure skating there are some jumps which are compulsory.

  6. extremities n.pl.: limbs of the body, especially the hands and feet. • One should keep one’s extremities inside of a moving vehicle.

  7. recoiled v.: shrank away; drew back • John walked carefully by the recoiled snake; they can strike half of their body length from this position.

  8. imperceptible adj.: not easily perceived • Jamaal imperceptibly ate his Big Mac; Ms. Bird did not suspect a thing!

  9. excruciating adj.: extreme; intense • The performance of Macbeth was so bad, the director was in excruciating pain as he observed his actors ignore his instructions.

  10. ensued v.: resulted • Teaja insulted Aubrey at lunch, and the food fight that ensued was colossal.

  11. chide v.: scold • If you do not sit quietly in class, Ms. Bird will chide you severely.

  12. smite v.: strike or hit • If you do not pay attention, Ms. Bird will smite your desk just like she did Keyon’s.
