Fact Sheet Cherokee Nation • What is the Cherokee Nation Diabetes Prevention Program? • DiabetesisaseriousproblemforAmerican Indiansand AlaskaNatives,whosufferfromsomeofthehighest ratesofdiabetesintheworld.Congressfunded theCherokeeNationDiabetesProgramto establishaprogramto prevent and treat diabetesinCherokeecommunities.Researchhasshown thatitispossibletopreventdiabetesthroughsimplelifestylechanges, suchasexercisingmore, eatinghealthyfood,andlosingsomeweight.Wearelookingforvolunteersto participateinthisproject andhelpseehowdiabetespreventionactivitiescanbe startedinCherokeecommunities. • Who can join the program? • We arelookingforpeopleage18andolderwhohaveamedicalconditioncalled“prediabetes.”Peo- plewithprediabeteshavehighbloodglucose(sugar) levelsbut theselevelsarenot highenoughtobediagnosedwith diabetes. Peoplewithprediabetesareat riskto developdiabetesovertimeandcanreduce theirriskthroughhealthy lifestylechanges. Ifyouhaveprediabetesandyoujoin theprogram, youwillparticipateinclassesto teachyouabout howtoeathealthierfood, toincreaseyour physical activityandtolosesomeweight. • Could I have prediabetes? • Most peopledonot knowiftheyhaveprediabetes.Youcouldhaveprediabetesif: • Someoneinyourfamilyhasdiabetes • Youweighmore thanyoushould • Youhaddiabeteswhenyouwerepregnant (called“gestationaldiabetes”) • Youhadababy weighingover9poundsat birth • Adoctorornursehassaidtoyouthatyouhavea“touchofsugar’or “borderlinediabetes” • How can I join the program? • Ifyouwouldlike to volunteerto beapart ofthisprogram, wewillfirst testyoutoseeifyouhavepre- diabetes.Ifthetestsshowthatyouhaveprediabetes,youwillbereferredforfurthermedicalcareand willbeinvited toparticipateinthisproject. • Why should I join the Cherokee Nation Diabetes PreventionProgram? • Wewillwatchyourhealth closely • Diabetesorotherproblemscanbefoundat theearliest possibledate • Youwillget freecheckupsandothermedicaltests • Youwilltakeclassesoneatinghealthy,increasingphysicalactivityandlosingweight • Ifyouhaveprediabetes,youmaybeable todelayor avoidgettingdiabetes byparticipat- inginthisprogram • YouwillhelpuslearnifwecanpreventdiabetesinmultipleCherokeecommunities • Therewillbenocosttoyou • Takingpartinthisprogramisvoluntary.
