  2. Are You In Search Of A Better Method Of Concrete Floor Construction?Shrinkage Compensating Concrete Will Meet Your Needs..... 2

  3. Shrinkage Compensating ConcreteACI Definitions:“SCC As Defined By ACI (American Concrete Institute) Committee 223”… “Shrinkage-compensating Concrete Is An Expansive Cement Concrete Which Is Used To Minimize Cracking Caused By Drying Shrinkage In Concrete Slabs, Pavements, And Structures.” “Shrinkage-compensating Cement Is Constituted And Proportioned Such That The Concrete Will Increase In Volume After Setting And During Hardening. When Properly Restrained By Reinforcement, Expansion Will Induce Tension In The Reinforcement And Compression In The Concrete. On Subsequent Drying, The Shrinkage So Produced, Instead Of Causing A Tensile Stress To Develop Which Might Result In Cracking, Merely Reduces Or Relieves The Expansive Strains Caused By The Initial Expansion.” 3

  4. Advantages: • No loss of load transfer due to continuous reinforcement • Floor flatness will not decline due to the effects of curling during the curing process • Minimize: • Caulking • Cracking • Curling • Joint maintenance • Eliminate all control joints ( Compare samples on slide # 5 ) 4

  5. Both samples are 150’ X 150’/22,500 SF Sample # 2 6” Shrinkage-Compensating Concrete with NO control joints. There will be no slab movement because control joints have been eliminated. The slab will function as a single unit and provide positive load transfer across the slab. Sample # 1 6” non-reinforced Portland Cement Concrete floor slab with 3,300 linear feet of control joints, and 144 independent panels. This slab will experience curling at the control joints, panel movement, and joint deterioration due to movement. 5

  6. Steps And ProceduresFor Producing A Shrinkage Compensating Concrete Floor Slab 6

  7. Step # 1“ASTM 878” Lab Testing To Determine The Amount Of Expansive Component Required In Mix Design 7

  8. Mixing SCC component with materials from the concrete supplier 8

  9. Placing SCC mix in removable molds 9

  10. Consolidating SCC Concrete 10

  11. Measuring expansion in SCC samples 11

  12. Step # 2 Expansive Component Is Added At The Concrete Batch Plant During Truck Loading And Mixing 12

  13. Step # 3Preparing The Building Pad For Concrete Floor Slab Placement 13

  14. Construction joints are formed with a steel armored edge and diamond dowels (by PNA) see details on slide #15 14

  15. 15

  16. Compressible expansion joint material is used to isolate fixed objects, building columns, walls, etc. Additional reinforcement is also used at these locations. 16

  17. Step # 4Rebar Reinforcement Is Positioned For Proper Restrained Expansion 17

  18. Step # 5SCC Placing And Finishing Procedures Are The Same As Portland Cement Concrete 18

  19. Step # 6Water Cure Surface For Complete Cement Hydration And Maximum Strength Gain Of Concrete 19

  20. Benefits Of Shrinkage Compensating Concrete • Reduce facility down time for costly slab repair • No control joints to maintain or re-caulk • Floor flatness will remain unchanged after building is in service 20
