  13. Jim is a 30-year veteran of the ocean tech industry, having worked in design, marketing and management for companies in Atlantic Canada, Ontario and New England. His career has spanned the aerospace and defence sectors as well as the marine environmental monitoring field. Over the years, Jim has worked in senior management positions with several large publicly traded multinationals and has also been a partner in two separate high tech companies that have successfully grown and been purchased by multinationals. Jim has a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree and an MBA. JIM HANLONChief Executive Director

  14. DOUG WALLACE Scientific Director Doug is a world leader in developing new technologies to measure changes to the world's oceans. Before becoming Canada Excellence Research Chair in Ocean Science and Technology, Wallace was professor of marine chemistry at the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences in Kiel, Germany. There, he also served as deputy director and head of the Marine Biogeochemistry Research Division. He holds a PhD in chemical oceanography from Dalhousie University and a bachelor's degree in environmental science from the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom.

DAVID KLASSEN Chief Operating Officer An experienced legal advisor with over 15 years of demonstrated excellence providing legal and business counsel to senior leaders, business unit managers and sales teams in Canada and the United States. Areas of expertise include corporate and commercial transactions, acquisitions, dispositions, financings, corporate governance, executive compensation, continuous disclosure and regulatory compliance. Proven ability collaborating with customers, key stakeholders and multi-disciplinary teams, and a solid track record as in-house counsel to Canadian public companies. David holds a law degree from the University of Western Ontario.

  16. CHERYL EVANS-CROWELL Communication Manager A detail-oriented public relations specialist with eight years of communication experience in the not-for-profit sector. Focus on two-way symmetrical communication, branding, advocacy, public campaigns and media relations. Cheryl has a Bachelor of Public Relations Degree from MSVU.

SUSAN FIANDER Financial Coordinator/Executive Assistant Susan is HMRI’s Financial Coordinator/Executive Assistant.   She has over 10yrs management experience in Human resources ,  payroll , and training.  She holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Saint Mary’s University and is a native Cape Bretoner.

Recent Activities Hosted a workshop on the opportunities for Nova Scotia ocean technology companies in tidal energy Led the acquisition and deployment of the SmartAtlantic Buoy (launched last week!) Developed the DeepSense Proposal Supporting the Discovery Centre planned move and focus on ocean science Chairing Session on Dual Use Technologies at the Marine Renewables Canada Conference

  30. The Early Stage Commercialization Fund (ESCF) For researchers engaged in life or physical sciences, engineering, computer science or other technology developments with market potential. Up to $50,000 in funding is available per project; renewable once. Funds can be used to assess market potential, develop market strategies, perform strategic planning, create/update business plans, assist with intellectual property protection strategies, finish proof-of-concept development, build prototypes and leverage of other funds.
