  3. OUR GOAL By the end of our study of Napoleon, you should be able to answer the following question. Was Napoleon the “Savior” of the French Revolution, or was he a Military Dictator? Support your answer with at least 3 pieces of historical evidence.

  5. French Revolution=Time of Chaos • Shifting governments: National Assembly, Legislative Assembly, Committee of Public Safety, the Directory • Church suppressed by radicals. • Sunday eliminated from calendar. • Reign of Terror

  6. Napoleon: The Man, The Myth, The Legend

  7. Napoleon Bonaparte • Island of Corsica • Grew up in military school. • Served in the Revolutionary French Army. • Military Genius

  8. Napoleon Seizes Power • 1799: Napoleon takes over the French government. • Coup D'état: A strike to the state, someone takes control of the government. • The French people accept Napoleon.

  9. Emperor Napoleon • By 1804, Napoleon declares himself Emperor. • In a bold move he ‘crowns himself’ at the ceremony. Why did he do this? Napoleon crowned himself, so he could show that HE was taking power, not being granted it by the church.

Napoleon’s Reforms • National Banking System: (fixes economy) • Made public schools, Lycees:(gives everyone education) • Napoleonic Code:system of modern law (equality/stability in law but limits some freedoms) • Concordat:Agreement with Church (balanced religion/government) • Merit System: Workers must be qualified for government jobs.

  11. Napoleon Takes on Europe • Napoleon’s Goal: World Domination • Battle of Austerlitz in 1805: Napoleon’s greatest victory • France controls Central Europe. The French Grande Armée Assembled

  13. BIG MISTAKE #1Continental System • Continental System: ablockade of Britainto prevent trade • Bad Plan: Britain has a stronger Navy and is able to beat the blockade. • End Result: Britain becomes self-sufficient. Industrial Revolution begins.

  14. BIG MISTAKE #2: Peninsula War • France invaded Spain. • Puppet Government: Install leaders loyal to France. • Nationalism: Extreme pride for your nation. • Guerilla Warfare: Spanish fight for their country and win. Francisco Goya: The Third of May, 1808

  15. BIG MISTAKE #3: Invasion of Russia • 1812: Napoleon invades with 450,000 men! • Russians use Scorched Earth Policy. • Destroy anything and everything useful to the enemy. • Burned crops, slaughtered livestock, destroyed towns.

  16. Moscow Burning • Napoleon retreats. • Winter sets in. • Napoleon returns to France with only 40,ooomen (lost over 400,oo0 people).

  17. End of Napoleon? • Russia, Austria, Prussia, Sweden, Britain, Spain gang up on France! • Napoleon is forced to surrender in 1814. • He is exiled to the island of Elba.

  18. Napoleon Returns!! • Napoleon escapes from Elba in March 1815. • He returns to Paris, regains power and rules for One Hundred Days. • June 1815: Defeated at Battle of Waterloo.

  19. Napoleon’s Exile (For Real This Time!) • Sent to St. Helena in the Atlantic. • He lived quietly, gardening, writing, and earned the respect of the British. • Several plots to ‘free Napoleon’ hatched, never completed. • He dies in 1821.
