  3. According to the 2006 census 524 people officially live on Atafu Island in the Pacific Ocean. 3.ATOLL-a small coral island in the shape Of a ring.

  4. This animation shows the dynamic process of coral atoll formation. In favorable conditions, the reef will expand, and the interior island will subside. Eventually the island completely subsides beneath the water, leaving a ring of growing coral with an open lagoon in its center. The process of atoll formation may take as long as 30,000,000 years to occur. 4. CORAL-a rock like material made up of the skeletons of tiny sea creatures, most plentiful in warm ocean water.

  5. Wake Island 5. Explain the difference between high islands and low islands in the Pacific. High islands are mountainous and formed by volcanoes. They have fertile soil of volcanic ash on which people grow crops. Low islands are made up of coral reefs or atolls and have poor sandy soil with little fresh water, making growing crops difficult.

  8. 8. Why do most of the people in the Pacific • Islands live in Melanesia? • Melanesia’s large islands are high islands and • support more people than low islands.

  9. 9. Most Pacific Islands have few natural resources. How might this affect trade between islands and industrial nations of the world? • It would be difficult for these islands to make money by exporting goods, they would need to import goods from other nations.
