Aim & Purpose The aim of this unit is to develop a learners under -standing and knowledge of the roles, responsibilities, skills and techniques of a sports coach and how to apply them whilst coaching and/or leading sports sessions. Learning Outcomes: Know the roles, responsibilities and skills of sports coaches Know the techniques used by coaches to improve the performance of athletes Be able to plan a sports coaching session Be able to deliver and review a sports coaching session.

  3. Definition of Sports Coaching What is Sports Coaching? ‘Sports coaching develops people through improving their performance’ National Coaching Foundation 1996

  4. Coaching… • To improve performance of individuals and the team • Develop a range of skills • Fun/satisfaction (both players & coach) • Safety

  5. Student Task In small groups identify as many roles as you can of a sports coach. The coach can be somebody you know, your coach or just a generic sports coach.

  18. Summary Sports Coaching is Made Up of Roles. There are many Roles dependent on the Sport, The Level, and the Coaching Situation. Sports Coaches have many Responsibilities.
