  1. BATTLE OF THE BRAINS

  2. WHAT IS BATTLE OF THE BRAINS? • A contest sponsored by Burns & McDonnell and Science City at Union Station. • Our task: To design an interactive science exhibit for possible installation at Science City. • We had to: • Write a proposal addressing “Big STEM ideas”, interactivity, age level, etc. • Use Google Sketchup to design the floorplan and layout of the exhibit. • Create a budget and itemize expenses. • Create a 2 minute video to accompany the entry.

  3. OUR PROCESS • Our first meeting: After a lot of ideas we finally agreed on the “Big Bang theory” and how it ties into chemistry. • We met afterschool for 8 weeks. • We read the rubric A LOT! • We all did research on our “big idea” but then we divided up the duties: • Janeth-Wrote and typed the proposal • Andie-Researched and made the budget • Matt-Used Google Sketchup to create the layout • Cheyenne-Made the video and helped everybody else

  4. AT THE START OF OUR JOURNEY Matt, Cheyenne, Carlos (from the other team), Andie, Janeth, Brittany (from the other team)

  5. THE NUMBERS 35 School districts in the KC Metro area. 128 different schools. 456 teams. 2,465 students. 560 submissions.

  6. AND THEN… They released the TOP 20… 10 Secondary Finalists and 10 Elementary Finalists And we made it! The finalists were chosen based on the rubric and the judge’s scores. The winners were chosen based on the rubric score as well as popular vote (30% of final score)

  7. NOVEMBER 21, 2011 AWARDS CEREMONY Although we didn’t “win it all”, we walked away with backpacks full of goodies, a trophy, and a $2500 check to improve STEM education in our school! (Then we played at Science City ) Mrs. Thomas was nervous and didn’t know where to stand 

  8. The 20 finalist teams

  9. A FEW HIGHLIGHTS EMAIL TELLING US THAT WE MADE IT TO THE FINALS!!

  10. WHAT NOW? The $2500 check has arrived! The Science and Math departments are working on a plan to improve STEM education at THS. And we’re waiting for Mrs. Thomas and Mr. Finkemeier to get us into another contest  !!!
