  2. Properties of Metals • Solid at room temperature (except mercury which is a liquid) • Malleable- Can be hammered into a thin sheet • Ductile- Can be drawn into a wire • Have luster-are shiny

  3. Metals Cont… • High Conductivity – good conductors of heat and electricity. • Metals tend to lose electrons in chemical reactions due to valency • Valency – the number of electrons an element needs to gain or lose to become stable.

  4. Properties of Non-Metals • Most are gases at room temperature (except Bromine is a liquid) • Are brittle as a solid (break easily) • Dull, not shiny and bright • Are poor conductors of heat and electricity • Tend to gain electrons in a chemical reaction due to valency

  5. Properties of Metalloids • Elements that have some properties of both metals and nonmetals. • Are on the stair step
