  1. Data Transmission and Collision

  2. Envelope Activity • Groups of 4 • Write a message to the person on your left 4 words long (ex: hey, how are you) • Tear off the words, into 4 pieces of paper • Write name on back of each paper • Follow teacher directions for next parts

  3. Data Transmission • Physical transfer of data (information) • Millions of pieces break and travel and meet up at destination • Sometimes lost (voice mail, email, TV show cuts out) • Other Names: • Digital Transmission • Digital Communication • Examples: • Optical Fibers • Wireless Communication (routers/switches) • Copper Wires (Cable)

  4. Two Types • Digital (baseline): electrical or light pulses • Computer • Analog (passband): wave signals • TV with antenna • Radio

  5. Channels • Simple: One Way • Ex: Radio, Remote Control, TV Show • Half-Duplex: Two-Ways, but only 1 at a time • Ex: Walkie-Talkie: Only one person can talk at a time • Full-Duplex: Two Way, Same time • Ex: Telephone

  6. The Orange Game (Network Design / Routing / Transmission Activity) • Multiple people using one resource (Internet) at the same time & problem solving • Groups of five • Possession of color strips • Pass color strips around while problem solving • Example of deadlocking

  7. Data Collision • When two or more computers send data at the exact same time • Network realizes the collision and deletes both packets of data • The computer then re-tries to send the information until it works • Example: • Clicking on a web site and it won’t load • Calling someone who is calling you (straight to voice mail, busy signal when they have call waiting) • How to avoid: Network Switch • Relays/re-routes information

  8. Class Activity • Hand Hold • Start one end, end at other (Single) • Start at one end, then switch when told (Half-Duplex) • Start at both ends simultaneously (Full-Duplex) • When one person is squeezed by two people, what is this?
