  1. ElijahofBuxton By: Christopher Paul Curtis

  2. Genre This book has a genre of Historical Fiction because back when slaves were aloud there were some that tried to escape and did. They started little villages called settlements that were usually in Canada or any free state. It was hard to keep a village together without getting caught by slave catchers.

  3. Main IdeaThe main idea is to show how harsh slavery was and how people got through it One thing to prove in this book was people were getting beaten and mistreated so harshly that they could easily die People would try to run away and would get caught and sold back to slavery and might even get separated from family members Slaves even in Canada with freedom they even could get caught by slave catchers and could even get killed for money

  4. Story elements characters Elijah-A brave fragile boy that was the first boy in the African American settlement born free and is scared of hoopsnakes. Cooter-Another boy that lives in the settlement that is Elijah’s best friend but gets in trouble a lot. The Preacher-A very bad man that is very greedy he also is a big mouth. He steals food from other people in the settlement that tricked Elijah and stole Mr. Leroy’s money also he is a conman. Mr. Leroy-Mr. Leroy is a very hard working man that has worked hard his whole life to buy the rest of his family out of slavery he has been helping Mrs. Holton put a pipeline in her backyard for money. Ma-She is Elijah’s mother that works very hard in trying to learn reading but doesn’t have the time she also isn’t the best cook says pa. She does everything she can for Elijah she was born into slavery without her mother so her grandma took care of her she is scared of Toady Frogs. Pa-He is a very hard working man that has no doubt in Elijah in doing anything even when it is hard work he supports Elijah in anything and would never let him get hurt.

  5. Setting The story mostly took place on a settlement in Buxton, Canada or in the woods. The only people that left the settlement were Elijah, Mr. Leroy, the preacher, and Mr. Chatham and only Elijah got back to the settlement un injured. Elijah also has a secret pond that only he knows how to get there or at the church in the settlement. But Elijah spends most of his time in the woods.

  6. Plot Beginning In the beginning the main problem is that Elijah’s friend Mr. Leroy has been working in Mrs. Holton’s backyard to save money to by his family out of slavery. He is planning to buy his son out first then with both of them working they will gain enough money to buy the rest of his family out. He doesn’t have enough money to by anyone out right now though so he will need to work extra hard to earn enough money.

  7. Plot Middle The problem gets solved by after Mrs. Holton’s husband dies they build a sign. The sign is to honor Mrs. Holton’s husband. They make the sign in two weeks it is amazing then Mr. Leroy carves it in one night. When Mrs. Holton sees it she pays him 2200 dollars and gold.

  8. Plot End The preacher says he will take the money and buy them out but he lies and steals it! He starts gambling and he actually wins but he goes to far and goes to a whites gambling place and gets caught. He got thrown in a little tavern and got tied to the wall when he was tied down he started yelling and screaming. So instead of sending him back to slavery they cut his tongue in half and killed him. They found Mr. Leroy’s money and took it so when Elijah went in he couldn’t find the money! He promised Mr. Leroy he would kill the preacher if he could. Instead when he went in he only saw five other heaps that he thought were ghost! Turns out they were runaway slaves there was a mom, baby, father, 12 year old boy, and another teenager! He tried so hard to brake them free but couldn’t so when he went to try to get help they wouldn’t help! So he went back and gave them his gun but the mom asked him if he would take her baby back to the settlement he told her he would take her to her mom and they both would take great care of her the mom told him her name was hope.

  9. AUTHOR’S PURPOSE I think the author’s purpose of writing this is to show and tell how harsh slavery was and how African Americans were treated like in slave times. The slaves in the north also have to look out for slave catchers and bounty hunters. Also I think a lesson was to always believe in yourself even if nobody else does. If your family friends and most of all you believe in yourself you can conquer all of your fears.
