  1. METROLOGY OF WATER QUALITY Project METREAU Philippe CHARLET

  2. The METREAU project is a concrete study conducted by LNE and BRGM, supported by French Ministry of Research Objectives: - to evaluate the possible benefits of the implementation of a metrological structure for environmental analyses - to assess the natural variability of water characteristics and its effects on the uncertainty of measurement

  3. Project focused on the determination of Cd and Pb in a groundwater Partners of the project: - PT provider: BIPEA and 46 labs having participated in a round robin - Producer of standard solutions: Merck Eurolab - Field laboratory: LDAR

  4. BNM-LNE NMI Mutual Recognition Arrangement between NMIs Reference Value Cd and Pb Certification Cd and Pb Merck-Eurolab Standard Solutions BIPEA Proficiency Testing scheme BRGM Groundwater Matrix CRM Uncertainty assessment LDAR Field laboratories

  5. Pure Standards  Matrix bias Matrix bias Proficiency Testing Drinking water Proficiency Testing Spiked water Matrix Bias No Bias ? Matrix Bias Matrix CRM (groundwater) • Different ways to organise a proficiency testing in order to underline bias

  6. Commercial or in-house made solutions  Pure Standards  Methods validation Proficiency testing Spiked water Matrix Bias Matrix Bias Matrix CRM (groundwater)

  7. Results of Cd analyses in the spiked water using regular calibration solutions and certified solutions

  8. Results of Pb analyses in the spiked water using regular calibration solutions and certified solutions

  9. Cadmium, µg/l Lead, µg/l Reference Value LNE 4.62 ± 0.36 19.8 ± 1.0 Mean 4.60 18.38 Repetability SD 0.14 0.71 Reproducibilty SD 0.55 2.38 Number of labs 44 41 Perfomances of the participants in the proficiency testing for Cd and Pb

  10. Repartition of results for Pb analysis in the groundwater

  11. Results of Pb determinations in the groundwater according to analytical methods

  12. Conclusions • The measurement uncertainty for Lead determination is about 20% (between 13 and 26 % according to the method used) • The METREAU project has shown that a metrological approach: • brings valuable information on reliability of calibration • and give prominence of estimation of possible bias for methods validation
