Molas. Brightly colored pieces of detailed, appliquéd cloth. Sewn by hand. Made by the Kuna Indians who live on the San Blas Islands off the east coast of Panama. Today the Kuna Indians live on approximately 50 of the more than 365 islands. The first molas appeared in the late 1800’s.

  4. The first molas appeared in the late 1800’s. What do you notice about these molas?

  5. The designs on molas are inspired from observations of the world around the Kuna Indians. Some examples include: geometric design, vegetation, animal or man-made objects.

  6. What kinds of shapes are used? • What do you notice about the negative space around the animal?

  7. Today, the Kuna Indians still lead a tribal life with strong traditions.

  8. A very detailed mola might take over 100 hours to complete! Favorite colors to use are: red, black & yellow

  9. Why might the Kuna Indians depict a fish in a mola?

  10. Today, molas are sold all over the world.

  11. Now you will start creating your own mola…think of things from nature that inspire you!
