  2. BACKGROUND • Inkaba – iseCalaeEastern Cape (proudly rural) • EbuKrestwinindiphekwekwiGuildeCape of Good Hope District kwisontolamaWeselilaseRosebanknakwiDistrictlaphobendinguNobhalaweSithili for 2 terms, ngikhokelwanguMfundisiuDimaza • That experience gave me a lot of information that I have compiled into a Wesley Guild Book titled: • The Effective and Discipleship Driven Wesley Guild Presented by Mrs NF Saliwa-Mogale, 28 Sept 2013

  3. SERVANT: • First used to refer to slaves • To trusted servants who did important things for their masters. Kings and prophets were also called servants of the Lord - ( A number of times God refer to King David as His servant ( 2 Sam 3 vs 18) and in Ezekeil 34 23-24 laphoakhulumangoDavideuMkhonziwam) - Isaya 20 v 3, [UIsayaumkhonziwam] • Later the word Servant applied to anyone serving God athiumaezicelelauDhlokweniukubayisisebenzikwiculo 199, vesi 4, athi, “uzungenzeisikhonzi, sasendliniyakho”. [Mangihlalengokubona] Presented by Mrs NF Saliwa-Mogale, 28 Sept 2013

  4. SERVANTHOOD • Servanthood is a method of sharing God’s word, sharing Jesus with people, through actions but ONLY when you do it with a servant’s heart. • It is NOT something that you do out of obligation, ngokunyanzeleka, it is an attitude of the heart. • Surrendering our lives to the service of the most high God, uthi, ukhulumelokhuokukwiculolamaWeseli 222: uthi, “nabuubomibami Nkosi, naziizandlazamimazikusebenzekonke, naziiinyawomazikusesebenzele, lonk’uthandolomphefumlonentozonkezamingiyazinikezelaukuthizisebenzelewena …. 6. SERVANTHOOD • “Servanthood" is a significant part of what it means to be a Christian – yingxenyeebalulekileyobuKrestubethu. • Our model of servanthood is Jesus. He states this clearly in a number of verses in the new testament. Ma uYohanenoYakobibecelaukuhlalangasekunenenangasekhohlokwakheebuqaqawulinibaKhe, bazeabanyeabafundibabacaphukelelabababini, uthiuYesuku-Marko 10:43-45, “… osukubaefunaukubamkhuluphakathikwenumakabengumlungiseleliwenunosukubaefunaukubangowokuqalamakabengumkhonziwenunonke, because Jesus came NOT to be served but to serve.” AthiuPawulos ma ebhalelaibandlalaseFiliphi, Philippians 2:5, “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.” “usukewazihluba, wathathaubumebomkhonzi”. Athi, ngokokemakubethelelekeezintliziyweninasezingqondwenizenu that, Jesus, was a servant, he came to serve. In other words, as followers of Jesus Christ, as Christians, as disciples, kulindelekeukuthinaninibezizicaka, ipositionnendawookuyoayodluliukubasisicaka. Presented by Mrs NF Saliwa-Mogale, 28 Sept 2013

  7. SERVANTHOOD What did Jesus do that shows servanthood? • Kuningibazalwane but I will quote one esiyazisonke: • NgobusukubangoLwesinekwiGumbieliPhezuluphambikokuthiuYesuabethelelwe: UYesuuhlelinabafundibakhe, badlaisidlosokugcina, ba-nervous, ngobaizintoazihambikahle. UYesuuyaziukuthiuzakubethelelwa in a matter of few hours. Bathibesadla, besaphethe la-a topic yokubangubaniomkhulukunomunye, ngubaniozakuhlalangasekunenenasekhohlo, asukeuYesuemengenyawo, abhinqeitawuliesinqenisakheathatheikomu. Athiengakhulumanganamuntu, athatheamanzi aye kumfundiwokuqala, amosuleuthuli, akugqibaahlambeiinyawozakhe, akugqibaazosule, adlulelekolandelayoenze the same thing. Kuthicwakaegumbini, kuphel’indabaabafundibedidekile. Babedidweyini?

  8. SERVANTHOOD • 1) Badidwekukuba, umsebenziwokuhlambaiinyawoyayingumsebenziwezicaka. Ubusithi ma ufikelwelundwendwe, uthiwawugqibaukulubulisaundwendwelwakho, kuthikubaiindlelazabozazinothuli, ubizeisicakasizokuhlambaiinyawozondwendwe. BabengothuswangakukuhlanjwakweenyawokokobabothusweyintoyokubaiinyawozihlanjwenguYesu, by the Master or the host. Kodwamasiyiqalekuverse 3 aphakuJohn 13, le ntosizokuyivakakuhle. Presented by Mrs NF Saliwa-Mogale, 28 Sept 2013

  9. SERVANTHOOD • Uthiuverse 3: “Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God”. • It is clear from this verse that Jesus knows very well that he is fully in relationship with God. He knows that he is the Son of God, the second person of the Trinity. • Then verse 4 tells us, “So, he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel round his waist”. It is in full knowledge of who he is that Jesus gets up. • He serves not in spite of who he is, but because of who he is. • He got up from his rightful place with the Father. He had a right to sit with the Father, because he is the Son of God. And yet, he gets up from this place. • Nalaphaetafileniebenendawoyokuhlala as the teacher and as the Lord but He got up from his place. Presented by Mrs NF Saliwa-Mogale, 28 Sept 2013

  10. SERVANTHOOD • Then next, he takes off his outer garments which represent who he is. He takes off his identity. • He chooses not only to get up from his place at the table, but also to strip himself of his identity. • Bazalwane, Jesus shows that greatness is not found in a title or position but true greatness is found in servanthood. • And having taken off his outer clothes, he puts on a towel. This towel is obviously the towel of a servant. So Jesus takes on the appearance of a servant. He has undergone quite a radical transformation – from being seated at the head of the table to being dressed as a servant; from being at the side of the Father to being a servant of humanity. • As Christians, we are supposed to be servants of humanity. Presented by Mrs NF Saliwa-Mogale, 28 Sept 2013

  11. SERVANTHOOD • Eyesibili into ebothusayo, umauhlambaiinyawo after a long day, uhlambaiinyawoezimdaka, sometimes ezinukayo and sometimes ukubaumntuakuhlambeiinyawo is a little embarassing. It is not comfortable but that does not bother Jesus. UYesuufunaukuhlambaezokanyezimdakaiinyawo, not eziqalezahlanjwa. • Eyesithathu, into ebothusayo is that, uYesu is not concerned about their argument of who is the greatest. In action, he is saying, if you argue about who is the greatest, who is the next Vice and President, you will not have time for foot-washing. Uthikubo, you have proud hearts but your feet are dirty and iinyawozabantuphaphandlezimdaka, yayezidiniwe. Do not fight over a throne, but fight over a towel and a basin yokuhlambaiinyawoezidingaukuhlanjwa. Presented by Mrs NF Saliwa-Mogale, 28 Sept 2013

  12. SERVANTHOOD • Okunyeabangakuqondikukuthiukuhlanjwakweenyawo symbolises ukuhlanjwakwemiphefumloyabonezonozabouYesuazakuzijingelaemnqalezwenikungekudala. The water that washes their feet, symbolises the blood that washes away their sin. UYesuuzamaukuthikubo, umanizekimi, nizisaizonozenuukuthizihlanjwe. Uthikubo, okudingekayokunikukuzizisanjekum, and mna I do it all. It symbolises inner cleansing. Kodwaangikhulumingalokho because that is another topic. Presented by Mrs NF Saliwa-Mogale, 28 Sept 2013

  13. SERVANTHOOD • Okwesine, when He is supposed to be worried and concerned about himself ukuthiuzakubulawa soon, he is concerned about other people. Servanthood demands that we get concerned about other people. How many of us in our journey of Christianity care more about us than other people? • Uma egqibaukubahlambaiinyawo, he asks, Do you understand what I have just done? Akugqibaathi, NjengokubandihlambeiinyawozenumnandiyiNkosi, naninifaneleukuhlambanaiinyawo. Athi, ndininikeumzekelo that you are supposed to follow. In other words, He was saying, “What you have just seen in action now is who and what I am. I came to earth as a servant, to wash dirty feet. If you’re going to follow me, if you are true GUILDERS, find some feet to wash. Do not just talk, sing, preach, or show off ngezambatho but DO.”

  14. SERVANTHOOD • THEREFORE: • We ought to practise servanthood, because Jesus did it. • The followers of Jesus distinguish themselves through humble acts of service to those who don’t expect it and are unable to repay it. • Foot-washing/servanthoodis a distinctive mark of the followers of Jesus Christ. • Servanthood is a mark of a true disciple. • Masingashumayelinjebazalwane, masingabingamaKristukodwamasibuphileubuKristungezenzo. When we say the pledge of the Wesley Guild ethi, I desire by the Grace of God to live a Christian life … let us mean it. Jesus did not spend time only preaching and singing and talking, but he was always practising servanthood, esebenza. • As a servant, you do not decide when you will serve, and who to serve but you become available and vulnerable to God’s service all the time. Presented by Mrs NF Saliwa-Mogale, 28 Sept 2013

  15. SERVANTHOOD • Yenziwanjanike le servanthood? UbayisisebenzisikaNkulunkulukanjani? Exactly, the way Jesus did it: • Jesus saw a need to wash the feet and moved to meet that need. You see a need and react. 2) Jesus did not wait for an invitation. 3) He took the initiative. 4) He took off his uniform of greatness and got down on his knees and worked. 5) He did not announce what he was going to do. He didn’t stand up and say, “ I am Jesus, and now I’m going to wash your feet.” 6) He didn’t wait for a thank you and did not receive one either. That is what a servant does. He sees the need and moves to meet it. Isisebenziasifuni de sincengwenomasinyanzelwe. Presented by Mrs NF Saliwa-Mogale, 28 Sept 2013

  16. SERVANTHOOD ATTITUDES THAT SUPPRESS SERVANTHOOD • Indifference – no desire to serve others, other things become more important than serving God’s people. • Placing limitations on our service – some people limit how, where and when they will serve. • Pride and self-centredness: which results in selfishness Presented by Mrs NF Saliwa-Mogale, 28 Sept 2013

  17. SERVANTHOOD ATTITUDES THAT SUPPRESS SERVANTHOOD • Doubt: Doubting the call to servanthood and thinking about material provision. • Laziness: which keeps the servant inactive. Presented by Mrs NF Saliwa-Mogale, 28 Sept 2013

  18. SERVANTHOOD ATTITUDES, ACTIONS AND MOTIVATIONS OF A SERVANT • Pride must be replaced by sincere humility, obedience and complete dependence on God • Love: for God - highest priority for servant and loving everyone around us including our enemies • Presence of the Holy Spirit as human nature at times pulls towards selfishness. The Holy Spirit will also help you to face personal struggles and give you added strength and courage to continue you service to others. It gives you wisdom in difficult situations. (Acts 6 :1-7 – ukunyulwakwabasixhenxe) It will empower you to help people that God has identified for you to help. (Phillip and the Ethiopian Eunuch). Presented by Mrs NF Saliwa-Mogale, 28 Sept 2013

  19. SERVANTHOOD ADVANTAGES OF PRACTISING SERVANTHOOD • Servanthood helps you in your spiritual growth. Unless you serve God in some way, you will never mature spiritually. • Servanthoodmaximises our potential. As you work for God, God honours you with Greatness. • Servanthood makes us effective witnesses to non-believers • Servanthood plays an important part in healing a hurting and a broken world. • Those who learn and practise servanthood advance the Kingdom of God. Compassionate acts of servanthood represent Jesus as much as sermons do. • Because uqhutywayintoengaphakathikuwe , it frees you from the need to posture, to pose and to calculate what others think. You give all without guarding your greatness and your dignity, you do it with free spirit leaning on God for guidance. • You are not driven by a drive to achieve or to accomplish. • Lastly, servanthood makes you a complete Guilder that practises the C that used to be called Christian Service, that in this district you call, Community Outreach and Development. Presented by Mrs NF Saliwa-Mogale, 28 Sept 2013

  20. SERVANTHOOD THANK YOU and GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!! Presented by Mrs NF Saliwa-Mogale, 28 Sept 2013
