  16. MAJOR CONSIDERATIONS Setting up the pupils for success • Choosing the right combination and being able to perform, achieve and attain a good aggregate (L1R5, L1R4, L1R2B2, EMB3) Competency level and performance trends- • E.g. Pupils who are weak in Science at Sec 2 do not achieve high score in pure sciences in upper sec

  17. OBSERVATIONS • Pupils who are weak in Mathematics and given a chance to do Additional Maths • Struggling with A Math • Unable to cope with 2 Mathematics subjects • Performance in E Math is affected • Difficulty coping with newer subjects like Combined Humanities and handling a whole range of them

  18. Ultimately, need to consider • ATTITUDE • CAPACITY • CONSEQUENCES OF WRONG CHOICE – CHILD DOES NOT DO WELL TO PROGRESS ON • VALUE OF THE SUBJECT

  19. Realities to consider • A Competitive Environment • Not just about entry level but success into a desired course of study • Choose carefully • Consider own ability and aptitude

  20. THE NEW ‘A’ LEVEL CURRICULUM • Life Skills • Knowledge Skills • General Paper, Project Work, Knowledge & Inquiry • Contrasting Disciplines Subjects • Languages • Humanities and Arts • Mathematics and Sciences

A Level Course • Three subjects at H2 level • OneSubject at H1 level • General paper • Project Work • Mother Tongue ONE of these 4 subjects must be from a contrasting discipline A Mathematics and Science student will be required to take ONE contrasting subject from the Humanities and Arts discipline. Hence at Secondary 4/5 it is important to have a good balance of subjects that one is competent in.
