History of APIA • Established in May1997 • Membership based, non-profit organization • Regional trade association • Established by the early pioneers of the ISPs • Role of APIA • Act as a catalyst to the regional Internet industry • Act as a voice of industry players to global Internet community Asia & Pacific Internet Association

How APIA is organized • Membership is open to everyone • 40 Members (organizations and individuals) • Six Board of Directors with various background • Secretariat (SG and Secretary) • secretariat office in Tokyo • Decisions based on consensus among Members at AGM • The Board acts on behalf of the Members between Member meetings Asia & Pacific Internet Association

Objects of APIA • to help develop industry policies, standards, and guidelines for effective/efficient operation • to facilitate/negotiate industry-wide agreement • to promote policies and positions in the best interest of the Members and represent these interests in relevant bodies • to provide/promote educational opportunities • to publish relevant industry data for Members Asia & Pacific Internet Association

Benefits to the Members • Input to industry-wide agreements and policies • Internet governance, ICANN (stronger representation to relevant bodies as we share info/ coordinate with national and regional associations) • Internet exchange points, ARIX • Educational opportunities with discounts • Updated information on the latest issues • newsletter, email, and website • Statistics and results from industry research Asia & Pacific Internet Association

Activities of APIA • Projects • Study of Internet Content Self-Regulation, ARIX • Newsletter #8 • Coordination effort with AP* [ap-star] • APNG, APAN, APNIC, APTld, MINC, etc. • Support or co-organize conferences/forums • APRICOT, CommunicAsia, InfoCom, etc. • Continuous involvement with ICANN Asia & Pacific Internet Association

The Future - Asia and Global • Strategic plan, identified clear goals and specific objectives • AP* Retreat in August in Thailand • APRICOT Conference • ARIX (ASEAN regional exchange point) • Involvement in ICANN process • Global alliance with other regional Internet assoc. • Continue to serve our Members and Internet community in Asia Pacific region Asia & Pacific Internet Association
