Reading • A mix of informational and fictional texts of different genres. • Text Based Questions will be used often to access student understanding where students will prove their answers from evidence in the text. To do this students will practice Close Reading. • Close Reading Strategies: a careful and purposeful re-reading of the text to search for purpose, structure, words, ideas, and flow of the text.

Vocabulary • Vocabulary will come from all subject areas. • In ELA vocabulary words may be somewhat individualized as students will be annotating what they read and searching for new vocabulary. • Tier 2 words will be studied: Words that appear with high frequency, across a variety of domains, and are crucial when using mature, academic language (coincidence, reluctant, analysis).http://www.edutopia.org/blog/vocabulary-instruction-teaching-tips-rebecca-alber • Prefixes, root words, suffixes, analogies, and words in context will be studied.

  7. Writing 6 + 1 Traits of Writing will be used along with scales and rubrics to teach, peer edit, self edit, and score writing. Types of writing: • Literary Responses • Argumentative/Opinion • Narrative • Expository/Informational

Other Information: We are the Bahama Llamas! • Use team and Mrs. Hanna’s assignments on website • View parent portal for grades • Email with questions! • Edmodo and Turnitin.com • Grading: 20 percent class work and homework and 80% quizzes, projects, assessments • Homework: • Weekly: reading minutes and book log • Nightly: grammar practice • As needed: finish class work, pre-read and annotate, projects.

  9. STEM • Science, Technology, Engineering and Math • School wide we each team is participating in a cross curricular STEM unit. • Our team has decided that we will begin our STEM unit called, “Chef”, in the 2nd quarter and we will each be teaching this on Wednesdays. • Students will rotate to each core subject where we will be teaching a portion of our STEM unit.
