  5. Background • 24,000 unfilled new jobs in high technology occupations in Virginia. • Lack of a trained labor pool to support the labor demand in the high technology fields. • Most of these high technology jobs are located in Northern Virginia and Richmond areas.

High Technology Training Programs Are Needed to: • Articulate training offered by New River Community College and the New River Valley secondary schools to prepare students for high technology careers including university transfer options, technician training and training for operator level positions.

  8. Programs are needed to : • Provide a trained manpower pool of significant size to support the recruitment of high technology industries to the Commonwealth and the New River Valley. • Meet the expanding technology training needs of existing industry.

  11. A regional computer technology program designed for NRV Secondary Schools-juniors and seniors. This program is designed to provide training in the operation, maintenance and application of computer related technologies in the modern workplace. Articulated programs with NRCC and Va. Tech.   13. A regional program for accelerated secondary students (juniors and seniors) in math, science and technology. The program is designed for university bound students. The program currently serves approximately 120 students from seven participating school divisions. Southwest Virginia Governor’s School for Math,Science &Technology

  15. Training programs designed to meet specific needs of business and industry.The modules can be uniquely designed around the high tech needs of today’s workplace. The infrastructure of the institute will lend itself to flexible program design with state of the art equipment unique to a particular industrial need. Programs in fiber optics and information systems are already in place along with semiconductor technologies and the highly regarded electrical/instrumentation/elec-tronics cluster.
