  2. What does Batting do? The middle of your' quilt sandwich' lies the Quilt Batting. It is also known as padding of the quilt or wadding of the quilt. Batting, along with dimension or thickness, is the insulating layer that offers warmth. we hope you can learn a little more about batting and the styles of batting available in my "quilt batting tutorial," along with a little history of quilts. www.mstexaustralia.com

  3. Many choices for quilt batting have grown over the years. Some antique quilts made in the early 1800s, quilted between new layers of fabric, have worn-out blankets or older quilts as the batting sheet. Australia’s quilt batting may be selected from a selection of fabrics, colours, sizes, and thicknesses. www.mstexaustralia.com

  4. Loft The batting thickness. This can impact the finished project's flatness or puffiness. Compared to heavy batting, a small, lightweight batting can make a quilt easier to sew. Since it is important to have tiny, even stitches over the entire quilt, it is much easier to go through a thin batting than a thick quilt batting Australia, but when done, you need to think about how your quilt would look. The extra loft is good to have with bound quilts, and a thinner loft is much easier to quilt with hand quilting. Types of Quilting Fabrics in Australia Cotton, polyester, wool, silk, alpaca, and now, bamboo will contain fibre. The fights you see most frequently include cotton, cotton/polyester hybrids and pure polyester. www.mstexaustralia.com

  5. 100% Cotton Batting Using cotton has many benefits. In quilting, cotton batting does not slide around as much. Some cotton battings are bonded, a technique used by manufacturers to tie the fibres together so that they do not move or beard the fibres. Cotton breathes and is very flexible- for traditional and heirloom quilting, it is preferred as it softens with age. If the batting involves scrims or other binders, consider washing before quilting to avoid any sort of shrinkage. Low loft batting is called cotton and is heavier than polyester. Natural, black and bleached cotton is available. www.mstexaustralia.com

  6. Wrapping Up You can combine them to create a mixed piece if you have leftover batting from prior quilts. This is often used for quilts that are very, very large. Spread out the batting bits on the left, and overlap the edges. Cut a wavy line across the part that is lapped. Remove the waste, then sew the pieces together by hand using a loose stitch; connect the pieces to the joint line back and forth. DO NOT overlap the batting because it will produce a double batting layer and it will be much harder to quilt OR sew a seam on the sewing machine.  For more information on 100% cotton batting get in touch with M&S Textiles Australia. www.mstexaustralia.com
