REFERENCE MANAGEMENT TOOLS • Tools that help scholars to create and manage their lists of references for research projects. • Most tools are designed to organize citations into specific formats for the preparation of manuscripts and bibliographies. • Many search tools provide ways to download references into reference management tools.

  5. SOFTWARE OPTIONS

  6. ZOTERO Zotero (zoh-TAIR-oh) is a free bibliographic management extension that works with Firefox. It recognizes websites and records in library catalogs and databases and is able to extract the bibliographic information associated with these sources. Stores related PDFs, files, images, and links in your personal library. Creates a bibliography in Word or OpenOffice. Publishes shared libraries for your organization, class, or research group.

  7. INSTALLING ZOTERO Go to http://www.zotero.org and click on the red Download graphic

  8. Click to start download add on Zotero for Firefox Click to start download Zotero Standalone INSTALLING ZOTERO Zotero is available in two configuration: Zotero for Firefox and Zotero Standalone OR

  9. Click to start installing Zotero for Firefox INSTALLING ZOTERO

  10. INSTALLING ZOTERO Zotero logo will appear on the bottom right corner of your browser

  11. You can open Zotero by choosing Zotero on the Tools Menu of your browser OR by clicking on Zotero icon on the bottom right corner NAVIGATING ZOTERO

  12. Left Panel shows your zotero libraries and collection Middle Panel displays items contained in the library you select in the Left Panel Right Panel displays information about the item you select in the Middle Panel NAVIGATING ZOTERO

  13. Click on the New Item icon and select the type of source you would like to cite ADDING CITATIONS CREATING CITATIONS MANUALLY

  14. Fill them in with the information for your item. Title in the middle panel will be automatically filled. ADDING CITATIONS CREATING CITATIONS MANUALLY

ADDING CITATIONS IMPORTING CITATIONS FROM DATABASES AND CATALOGS Zotero is compatible with many databases and library catalogs, including Mirlyn, Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, EBSCOhost, InfoTrac, JSTOR, LexisNexis, OCLC First Search, Proquest, and Pubmed. If you are on a page with a list of results, a folder icon will appear in your address bar. If you are looking at an individual record, a Book Icon or Article icon will appear instead

  18. On a result list, a box will appear with a list of all records; you can check the items you would like to import Click OK ADDING CITATIONS IMPORTING CITATIONS FROM DATABASES AND CATALOGS

  20. Click on New Collection icon in the Left Panel Fill in the dialog box with name of collection and then click OK. ORGANIZING YOUR LIBRARY COLLECTIONS CREATING NEW COLLECTION

  21. Drag the citation to the new collection in the Left Panel. ORGANIZING YOUR LIBRARY COLLECTIONS ADDING CITATIONS TO A COLLECTION This step will not remove the item from its original location. A copy will appear in the new collection.

  22. Right click on the collection you would like to rename and select Rename Collection. Fill in the dialog box with new name of collection and then click OK. ORGANIZING YOUR LIBRARY COLLECTIONS RENAMING COLLECTIONS

  23. Right click on the collection you would like to remove and select Remove Collection. Click OK to remove selected collection ORGANIZING YOUR LIBRARY COLLECTIONS DELETING CITATIONS REMOVE COLLECTION

  24. Click on a tag SEARCHING FOR CITATIONS SEARCHING TAGS

  26. Click on the Advanced Search icon SEARCHING FOR CITATIONS ADVANCED SEARCH

  27. In the search box, type the word you would like to search The list of result will be displayed at the bottom of the search box SEARCHING FOR CITATIONS ADVANCES SEARCH

  28. Right click on the selected item and choose Create Bibliography from Selected Items CREATING A BIBLIOGRAPHY Note : To generate a bibliography for a collection, right click on the collection in the Left Panel and select Create Bibliography from Collection

  29. Choose the citation style you would like to use Choose the format you would like to save CREATING A BIBLIOGRAPHY

  30. Select the item you would like to attach ADDING ATTACHMENTS • In Zotero, any type of file can be attached to an item. • Items such as the PDF of an article or images can be opened in the Firefox window, while other types of files are open in external programs.

  31. Click on the Attachment icon and select Attach Stored Copy of File ADDING ATTACHMENTS

  32. The attached file will be displayed under the title in the Middle Panel ADDING ATTACHMENTS

USING ZOTERO WITH WORD • Zotero's Word and OpenOffice plugins allow users to insert citations directly from their word processing software. • You can find a link to install the plugin on Zotero homepage (www.zotero.org). • After installing the plugin you will see this row of icons in your Microsoft Word toolbar: • These six buttons allow you to manage references and bibliographies in your Microsoft Word documents.

NOTES • A core feature of Zotero is its ability to automatically format citations and bibliographies. • By default Zotero comes with a selection of popular styles (such as APA, Harvard and Vancouver), but many more are available through the online Zotero Style Repository at:http://www.zotero.org/styles • Most journals provide information on which reference style to use in their “Instructions to authors”. Look for “References” heading.
