  2. Acerbic (adj) • Root=Acerb=bitter • Definition=bitter or sharp in tone, taste, or manner • Her acerbic tone did not make it sound like she wanted to go home.

  3. Cauterize (vb) • Root=caut=burn, heat • Suffix=-ize=to treat with • Definition=to treat tissue with heat to stop bleeding • The Dr. must cauterize the wound so the patient doesn’t lose any more blood!

  4. Induct (vb) • Prefix=in-=into • Root=duct=to lead or pull • Definition=to lead someone formally into a position • They were inducted into their new positions at work by saying an oath.

  5. Heteronym (n) • Root=hetero=different, other • Suffix=-nym=name • Definition=two words that are spelled the same, but have different meaning and/or pronunciation • EX: bow=a ribbon bow=of a ship
