  1. Goodbye! 15thMarch 2014 אדר תשע"ד Thanks to all of you for giving us a great 18 months as youth directors, but it is time for us to move on, and let the next people take over and take on the job of helping this great youth service continue to grow and continue to improve. When we started we were told there was nobody who could lead davening or leyn and now we are spoilt for choice every week. We were told that there was nobody who would come to make a minyan, and now we don’t even remember what it feels like to wait or to go to the main shul grovelling for men.  We have had amazing events with all of you, Thorpe Park, Quasar in the Sukkah, Go-Karting – saw so many new youth, and built our relationships with so many older youth. We are not going anywhere, and will still be living in Borehamwood and Elstree (although unlike the last Youth Director who stuck around, Josh has already done his stint at Yavneh!). So if you need anything from advice, help with leyning (would offer davening, but Ben and Josh have that covered), or even a helping of Katie’s famous sweet potato pie,  just give us a call 07983453391 or 07591959343. We won’t be around on BES Tribe Facebook as it won’t be us anymore, but add us both as friends on facebook and stay in  touch. There is a lot of potential in this community, so don’t waste it. There’s so much you are able to do for your community, and on a wider level for the Jewish People. Think big. Think to the future of the Jewish People and make the world a better place. Have a Happy Purim Katie and Josh • צַו/פּוּרִים • Purim/Tzav 17:49 18:52 Purim Shorts • There is an argument within the Rabbis over why women have a responsibility to hear Megillah.  The gemaratells us it was because they too were part of the miracle, but Rabbis are divided over what that means. Rashi says because, like at Pesach and Chanuka (where this term is used as well), women were in the same danger as the men, so have thanking to do too. Rashbam (his son-in-law)  disagrees and says it’s because of Esther. • So what did she do so special? • It takes a lot of patience and cunning to be able to hatch the plan that Esther did.  If she has come out when she knew that Haman was trying to destroy the Jewish people had told the king, he may have simply said “good”, as she knew he was Haman’s number 1 fan. So what did she do? She has to play the long game. She had to wait and do nothing for months whilst in the best position to save the Jews, but knowing the best thing to do is wait. She saw a beginning of paranoia in Achashverosh. He was suspicious of Haman wanting to take his job. Why was Haman in the palace in the middle of the night? Why was Haman’s dream of how to reward somebody to make them feel like the king? And now worse, his own wife wants a party with just Haman invited. So when she broke the news, and then found Haman lying on Esther’s sofa (admittedly to beg, but that’s not how it looked) it was game over for Haman..
