  4. UNCHAIN Chair Establishment The university of Aleppo offered a space of 70 square meters to host the chair. It is located beside the AUF( AgenceUniversitaire pour la Francophonie ).It consists of an office for secretary, large room for computers, and there is an enough space to construct a room for training courses. The university provided the chair with the furniture, two air conditioners, photocopy machine, new curtains, and internet. The president of the university was cooperative and he facilitated the establishment of UNCHAIN university chair on innovation.

  5. Working Group Constitution In consultation with the president and the vice president of the university, a working group of five from university staff was constituted to represent various disciplines of the university. Medical sector (medicine, dental medicine, and pharmacy) represented by Dr FaysalSaraj.Sciences, agriculture, and technical engineering, represented by Dr Abdullah Kattah, and Dr Hussein al Mohamad.Engineering sector (civil, electrical, mechanical, and informatics engineering) represented by Dr AmmarNassani, and Dr HasanMulki.Incubator technology represented by Dr KherTarshaKurdi.

To achieve the activities planned by the UNCHAIN project quickly and correctly. • To work out a strategy at the local level for technology transfer and the innovation. • To be a permanent contact person for faculties which are represented. • To strength the relationship between the university and the industry. Tasks of the Working Group

Consulting Group Constitution Also in consultation with the president and the vice president of the university, a consulting group of the faculties deans was constituted to represent various disciplines of the university. The working group meets the consulting group regularly:To inform them about the activities of the UNCHAIN project and discuss with them the possibility of collaboration.To have their opinions and their suggestion on the various points of the UNCHAIN project.To work out a strategy at the faculty level for technology transfer and the innovation.

  14. The working group distributed UNCHAIN project questionnaires among university staff in several faculties and explained the purposes of these activities. Theycollected the questionnaires later and translated them into English and made the summery of the results. Meeting the consulting group in October 2009(dissemination activities)Meeting the industrial chamber and another industrial companies in November 2009.

The Relationship between Aleppo University and Industry • The weakness of communication and information between university and industry prevents the exchange of successful experiences. • Also most of the researches at the university do not serve the industry and their impactis modest in economic development. • This relation has the following aspects : • Lack of administrative incompatibility with needs. • Insufficient financial support for R&D. • University misses a clear mechanism to locate and follow the problems and the development of industry. • Insufficient trust between the industry and university. • .

  16. Chair Visit by METID Staff from Centro METID-Politecnicodi Milano 22nd, 23nd June 2009: METID staff involved in this visit was composed by:MsNicolettaTentinaglia International Project Manager. And Mr Gianfranco Elia METID IT staff.The main objective of this visit was in fact to understand the context in which WP5 activities would be performed.During the first day in Aleppo visit METID staff visited the president of the university. Then they were interviewed by Syrian local TV station.The METID staff visited faculty of mechanical engineering.They met the working group in the chair. The METID staff and the working group attended a presentation performed by IT manager in Aleppo University. He talked about the IT infrastructure in national context in Aleppo ( diffusion levels, typologies of internet access, etc..).

The METID staff performed testing included the following elements : • The wiki ( UNCHAIN Virtual Environment ). • The live session system ( used in the project ). • Some web 2.0 tools that could be integrated in WP5 cooperation activities ( as for example C-MAP, Delicious, Google, DOCS, You Tube, etc..). • During the second day of Aleppo visit the president, the vice president, the consulting group, the working group, and number from the university staff attended the presentation which was given by Dr. Hussein Al Mohamad about The UNCHAIN University Chair on Innovation. • After that the METID staff explained WP5 activities, wiki, adobe connect, • and some examples of web 2.0 tools that could be used in the e-cooperation activities.

The staff involved in the UNCHAIN project discussed the followingaspects : • Objectives, expectations, specific needs of AU towards WP5 activities. • Profiles / characteristics of subjects involved in WP5 activities ( both on university and enterprise side of the University Chair on Innovation ). • Needs of subjects involved. • Previous experience of the organization and of the subjects involved in the project regarding : e-cooperation activities, on line communication, internet use, etc.

  23. Preparing for UNCHAIN Aleppo Meeting in theBeginning of the Next Year 2010. • We are planning for this meeting to be held in March / or April 2010. We are thinking about lectures to be given by professors from UNCHAIN partners universities concerning the following field : • Role of the higher education and the research in the innovation and the Sustainable Development • The principal axes are: • - Adaptation of the higher education and innovation • - Role of the university to the technology transfer • - The innovation and relation university –Industry • - Role of the innovation and the technology transfer in the • Sustainable Development in Syria
