  3. Republican Revolt • Corruption in Grant’s administration • Party Split • Reconciliation- Coming together again • Horace Greeley –Liberal Repulican- NY- Ran against Grant 1872 • Grant Won

  4. Amnesty Act 1872 • This act would Pardon most former confederates • Now Nearly all white southerners could vote and hold office again. • Changed political balance in the south • Voted for Democrats • By 1876 3 states majority republican • FL, SC and LA • Violence near election time

  5. End of Reconstruction • Rutherford B.Hayes Vs Samuel Tilden • Presidential Election 1876 • Tilden Dem- NY Governor • Tilden Appeared to win 250,000 More votes than Hayes. • Special Commission to review election Results • Result hayes wins- 4 Months after election • Compromise of 1877

  6. Compromise of 1877 • More aid to south and Take away troops • Democrats promised to give African Americans rights. • The federal government would no longer attempt to reshape southern society or help AA.

  7. A new Ruling Party • Redeemers- saved from republican Rule- • Lower taxes, less public spending, less services. • Even eliminated some funding to education • New South • Build on industries • Coal Iron Tobacco Cotton Lumber • Largest Gains in Textile industry • James Duke- Tobacco industry

  8. Growth/Economy • Factories had abundant workers • Railroad building boom • Miles of RR double from 1880-90 • Still primarily agricultural • Overproduction Cotton prices fall

Divisions • Poll taxes- fee charged before voting • Literacy test- Test before being able to vote • Grandfather Clause-if grandpa voted before reconstruction they could vote • Kept AA from voting • South was Segregated or Separated by races • Separate everything • Challenged in Plessy V. Ferguson • Supreme Court upheld

  10. Violence and Impact of Recon • Lynching – mob violence and death by hanging. • Misbehavior, or suspected of crimes • Success and Failure- Reconstruction • Recover from war far from over • New Agriculture still poor and rural • Greater equality no promise of freedom • for African Americans
