  2. 1900’s • Growing discontent within working, middle, and upper class of the monarchy. • Spanish Colonies in North and South America and Far Eastern Asia lost after Spanish-American Wars at the end of 19th century • Spain was facing major economic problems

  3. 1900’s cont. • Alfonso XIII blamed for Spanish defeat in Moroccan War 1921 • Rapid increase in education.

  4. 1923-1930 • Miguel Primo de Rivera’s military dictatorship • Tried to establish economic and social reform • Attempted to decrease unemployment • Lost Army’s support in 1930

  5. 1930-1933 • General Elections in 1931 were won by Republicans, ousted the King peacefully. • Republicans instilled reforms to help liberate Spain • 1932: Failed Military coup led by Jose Sanjurjo • 1933: the Spanish elections resulted in a victory for right-wing CEDA party

  6. 1933-1936 • January 1933- 25 people were killed by government troops who were attempting to catch some anarchists near Cadiz. • Azana resigned as prime minister and elections were called for November 1933. • Popular Front hence was formed

  7. 1933-1936 cont. • In a last minute attempt to avoid serious trouble, a general election was called for February 1936. • In this election, the Popular Front won and Azana, became president.

  8. Summer of 1936 • July 13 1936; the decisive gunshot went off • July 17 revolt starts in Spanish Morocco • The republicans were representing the workers and the middle class • The nationalists were representing the army and were more conservative

  9. General Elections • 1931  Republicans won. • 1933  Nationalists won (CEDA). • November 1933  Nationalists won. • February 1936  Popular Front won (republicans.)
