  1. Heat Pumps An introduction

  2. What is a Heat pump? A heat pump is a machine which is used to heat your house in place of a conventional fossil fuel boiler.

  3. Renewable Heat? Heat pumps use electricity to run. For each kWhr or unit of electricity used the heat pump grabs hold of 2 or 3 units of heat from the air or ground. The heat from the air / ground is renewable, it is replenished by the sun. So this part is renewable. As a result Heat pumps are a 50 -75% renewable heat source.

  4. How does it fit in my house?

  5. Standard House Heating & Hot water System

  6. Heating & Hot water System with Monobloc HP

  7. Mono Bloc Installed

  8. Samsung Monoblocs • The EHS range of heat pumps will heat water up to 55C. • Available in sizes from 9 and 16kW suitable for houses of up to 300 m^2 • Suitable for heating and hot water provision serving ufloor heating and or radiators.

  9. Is it noisy? • The noise level is 56 dBa • My car is 61 dBa on tick over

  10. Is it a simple swap for my boiler?

  11. Radiators • Radiators don’t work the same on heat pumps as they do on boilers. • The temperature is lower. • The heat output is lower so bigger radiators need to be installed

  12. Underfloor heating Under floor heating runs at 45C so is perfect for heat pumps.

  13. Solar thermal Heat pump

  14. Why Choose a Heat Pump?

  15. New build In new build developments 20% of energy use must come from a renewable source. Installing heat pumps in some of the houses helps to meet this target. In 2016 Code 5 is introduced, from this point on gas boilers will no longer be an option in new builds.

  16. Run Costs 120m^2 house July 2011 Ofgem figures Average electricity usage of 3,300 kWh @ 13p/kWhr or £429 per year for lighting, domestic appliances etc. Average gas usage of 20,500 kWh @ 4.9p/kWhr or £1006 for heating and hot water at 84% efficient this provides 17136 kWhrs of heat

  17. Run Costs 120m^2 house Figures based on the SCOP / SPF calculation in the energy performance in buildings directive

  18. Is a heat pump suitable for my House?

  19. Insulation level Heat pumps suit well insulated properties best. They do not suit very large or badly insulated properties. Example: in a Code 3 house a heat pump will cost £30 / m^2 In a 1980s house this will cost £50 / m^2 In a 30s cavity walled house they will cost £70 / m^2 And in a solid walled house they can cost £100 / m^2

  20. EST* Advise to End Users When you should consider a heat pump We particularly recommend considering a heat pump if your home is one of the approximately five million properties that are off-gas, or for a new-build property. Heat pumps are not recommended to replace gas boilers at this time. *Energy saving trust

  21. Payback Times Assuming a 120m² house: HP installation will cost £7000, gas boiler would be £3000. Oil boiler installation would be £6000. The Heat Pump will cost £651 p/a the gas boiler £1005 p/a The oil boiler will cost £1142. p/a Payback: vs. gas saving is £350/ yr. Installed cost is £4000 more, payback is 11.5 years vs. oil saving is £491/ yr. Installed cost is £1000 more, payback is 2years

  22. Off grid and fuel security 5 M households in England, do not have access to the gas network, The number of claims made for stolen fuel spiralled by 264 per cent in January 2011.

  23. Incentives

  24. Are there any incentives available to help? RHPP From August 2011 a one off payment of £850 is available if you have a heat pump installed. This scheme ends in March 2012. VAT In retro-fit heat pumps have only 5% vat In new build heat pumps have 0% vat RHI In October 2012 there will be an run cost rebate from the government called the renewable heat incentive.
