MENTAL DISORDERS • ILLNESS OF THE MIND THAT CAN AFFECT THE THOUGHTS, FEELINGS, AND BEHAVIORS OF A PERSON, PREVENTING HIM OR HER FROM LEADING A HAPPY, HEALTHFUL, AND PRODUCTIVE LIFE • REQUIRE MEDICAL ATTENTION JUST LIKE PHYSICAL ILLNESSES • 20% OF U.S. POPULATION SUFFERS FROM A MENTAL DISORDER • ONLY ONE-THIRD OF YOUTH RECEIVE THE HELP THEY NEED • CAUSES: GENETICS, TRAUMATIC LIFE EVENTS, BRAIN CHEMISTRY IMBALANCE

DEPRESSION • Prolonged feeling of helplessness, hopelessness, and sadness • More serious than just a sad mood • Two types: reactive depression: response to stressful event major depression: medical condition needing treatment • Symptoms of depression: irritable, restless mood withdrawal from friends & activities change in appetite or weight feelings of guilt or worthlessness sense of hopelessness • Symptoms lasting two weeks or more signal treatment needed

WARNING SIGNS CONT. • IMPLULSIVE, IRRATIONAL, OR BIZARRE BEHAVIOR • OVERWHELMING SENSE OF GUILT, SHAME, OR REJECTION, NEGATIVE SELF-EVALUATION • DROP IN GRADES OR RECREATIONAL PERFORMANCE • GIVING AWAY PERSONAL OBJECTS • SUBSTANCE ABUSE • COMPLAINING ABOUT HEADACHES, FATIGUE, STOMACHACHES, BOREDOM • VIOLENT ACTIONS, REBELLIOUS BEHAVIOR, RUNNING AWAY • INTOLERANCE FOR PRAISE OR AWARDS
