  2. Colossians 3:17 • 17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do ALL in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

TWO IMPORTANT WAYS TO LOOK AT TIME • Quantitative: quantity- amounts • Years, months, weeks, days, hours, seconds, specific periods • Greek term for this concept of time: Chronos • Luke • Qualitative: quality • opportunity, “due season” • Greek term for this concept of time: Kairos • Col. 4:5 (making the most of the opportunity/time /Kairos) In both aspects we ought to spend more time in service to the Lord.

Redeeming the time • Eph. 5:15-17; • We redeem the time by using our time well in both of these ways • Quantitatively: prioritizing and spending more time for the Lord. • It may make sense that we spend more (quantitative) time sleeping and working than we do worshipping and reading the Bible. • But we probably ought to spend more time reading the Bible than playing X-box • Qualitative: making God the center of all that we do and say. • Doing all in the name of the Lord! (Col. 3:17)

  10. The Context of Col. 3:17 • Col. 3:1-4:6 • Setting your mind on things above not on things of the earth (3:2-4) • Considering our bodies dead to sin (3:5-11) • Putting on characteristics of godliness (3:12-15) • Teaching and admonishing through song (3:16)

Redeeming the Time: Having Spiritual Focus/Purpose • Work/School: 8 hours a day • “command to… work quietly and to earn their own living” (2 Thess. 3:10-12) • Provision for family (1 Tim. 5:8) • “work heartily as for the Lord” (col. 3:23) • Building influence/relationships with co-workers (Matt. 5:16) • Rest • Sweet after a hard days work (Eccl. 5:12; prov. 19:23) • Viewing this as a gift from God • Giving thanks

Redeeming the Time: Having Spiritual Focus/Purpose • Entertainment/social media • Abstaining from sinful entertainment • Enjoying entertainment that incorporates good morals, teamwork, etc. • Facebook • Hobbies/Recreation • Hobbies and recreation that builds good habits/discipline • Using such activities to build relationships and influence

Redeeming the Time: Having Spiritual Focus/Purpose • Socializing/Visiting with friends • Building an influence (laying a foundation) • Using this time to encourage one another • Talking about spiritual things • Worship/Bible study/Bible reading • Focusing/paying attention • Making application

  16. Money • Perhaps these principles can also be applied to money when we would desire to give more. • Quantitatively • 1 Cor. 16:1-3 • Qualitatively • All of our money is Gods. (Ps. 24:1; 1 Chron. 29:14) • Having Godly purpose behind buying what we buy. • What is our purpose when we buy the things that we buy.
