  7. National Chemical Monitoring Programme • Sample collection and registration • Sample analysis (macro, trace metals, nutrients, pH, conductivity) • ISO 17025 accreditation

National Toxicity Monitoring Programme • 12 Persistent Organic Pesticides (POP’s) • e.g. DDT (malaria control) dieldrin, HCB,etc. Pesticides used in Agriculture: -e.g. Atrazine, Simazine, carbamates etc. + Biological tests: 1) Zebra fish embrio toxicity 2) Water Flea (Daphnia pulex) toxicity Pesiticides in sediments ( needs analysis)

  9. National Microbial Monitoring Programme • Colilert (E.coli) Bimonthly reports at strategic sampling sites. • Faecal coliforms • Faecal Stretococci. • Cholera (Medical Research Institute) - type O1 Endemic in hotter parts of South Africa

  10. National Eutrophication Monitoring Programme • Orthophosphate and total phosphorus • Kjeldhal Nitrogen and NO3. • COD • pH • Ammonia • Chlorophyll-a • Algal identification and enumeration

  11. National Eutrophication Monitoring • Status and trends of algal blooms, PO4 and total P in impoundments. • Problem of toxic blooms ( eg Microcystin from cyano-bacteria and Cylindrospermopsin in Orange River) • Phosphate removal technology (UP-pilot testing).

  12. National Radioactivity Monitoring • Screening for Gross alpha, Gross beta and chemical uranium • Further testing depending on alpha/beta ratio • Association of uranium with gold mining wastes.

  13. National Toxicity Monitoring • Toxicants and toxicity tests • Stockholmn convetion (DEAT/DWAF) • EDC (WRC/DWAF) • In Pilot implementation phase • CG-MS analysis for 10 of 12 POP’s plus commonly used pesticides in Agriculture (DEAT and DA).

River Health Programme • Habitat, riparian Vegetation, wetlands, SASS index (South African Scoring System for aquatic invertebrates, indicating state of river health), Fish index, etc. • Data from NCMP on chemical toxicants • Data from NTMP for organic pesticides • River classification system (A to D).
