  1. Memory The ‘three threes’ types, processes and stages

  2. What is memory? • Process by which we recollect prior experiences, information and skills learned in the past • Flashbulb memory • Important events remembered in great detail • Evokes powerful feelings • Special accomplishments • Very positive or very negative in nature

  3. Three kinds of Memory • Episodic • Autobiographical • Specific event • Semantic • General knowledge • Do not remember when we acquire this info • Implicit • Skills & procedures

  4. Three processes of memory • Encoding • Translation of information into a form in which it can be stored • Storage • Maintenance of stored memories • Retrieval • Locating stored information & returning it to conscious thought

  5. Encoding • Visual • Memories as a picture or image • Acoustic • Auditory memory • Memories as a sequence of sounds • Semantic “relating to meaning” • Represents information in terms of meaning • Mnemonic devices (acronyms)

  6. roygbiv semoh

  7. Storage • Maintenance rehearsal • Repeating info • Poor method because it has no meaning • Elaborative rehearsal • Make info meaningful by relating it to other knowledge • Organizational systems (groups & classes) • Increase in size & subgroups as we age • Sometimes we misfile by name

  8. Retrieval • Context dependent memories • Experience encoded • Dependent on place where encoded & stored • State dependent memories • Mood encoded • Memories that are better retrieved from a similar emotional state • Tip of the tongue phenomena • Retrieval of info based on semantic/acoustic cues • Organize memories by labels
