  1. Sternberg’s Intelligences Anchoring Activity • Analytical • Your friend needs a really clear step by step explanation of what division is and how it works. Please create one. • Practical • Show how someone at school, home, or in our town uses division to solve real needs in his or her life. Help us see how and why this person uses division. • Creative • Find a brand new way to show what division is all about and how it works.

  2. Sternberg’s Intelligences Anchoring Activity for AlgebraStudents will compare and contrast the use of the various equations for constructing a line. • Analytical • What are the important mathematical distinctions between the equations? Give an example of the problem in which each equation would be most useful. • Practical • In what situation would each type of equation be most useful? Give a real-life example for the best use of each. • Creative • Put the lines on trial-the prosecutor tries to get rid of a certain equation, and the defense must defend its usefulness. Source: Nanci Smith (2003). Differentiation in Practice.

  3. Sternberg’s Intelligences Anchoring Activity for Social StudiesStudents will analyze a character from the Civil War and how their role impacted the battle. • Analytical • Explain why a character made the choice they did and how their choice affected other characters in the book. • Practical • Show who you could apply the lesson learned by a character of your choice to a real life problem you experienced. • Creative • Choose one character. Take on the identity of the character to explain another way the problem could have been resolved.

  4. Sternberg’s Intelligences Anchoring Activity for ScienceStudents will analyze the interrelationships of cell parts/functions. • Analytical • Use a cause/effect chain to show how each part of a cell affects other parts. • Practical • Look around you in your world or the broader world for systems that could serve as analogies for the cell. Select your best analogy. Devise a way to make the analogy clear and visible to an audience. • Creative • Use unlikely item to depict the structure and function of the cell, with emphasis on interrelationships among each of the parts.

  5. Sternberg’s Intelligences Anchoring Activity for English • Analytical • Select a story you believe does not have an effective plot base on these criteria. • Practical • A local TV station wants to air a teen produced video for well-known literary works. Select a storyboard and make a case in words and imagine that your selection meets the criteria. • Creative • Propose an original story you think has clear and believable plot structure, a logical sequence, etc. Write a storyboard, flowchart, etc. and explain your story.
