The average square inch of skin holds • 650 sweat glands • 20 blood vessels • more than a thousand nerve endings Skin also-- • Accounts for 15% of our body weight • Forms a barrier between the internal and external environment • Contains nerve endings that react to heat, cold, touch, pressure, vibration, and tissue injury. • Heat regulation---sweat glands • Medicine can be administered through the skin 800.888.2876 | www.phoenix-society.org

  6. Degree of Burns 1. First Degree Burns: superficial, similar to a sunburn (left) 2. Second Degree Burns: Damage the next layer of skin and may or may not require surgery (middle) 3.
