  1. The Pink Panther Genius of Peter Sellers and Blake Edwards

  2. Directed by Blake Edwards • Written by Blake Edwards and Martin Jurow • Stars Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau • Also starred in “Dr. Strangelove” • Also Stars David Niven • Also starred in original “Casino Royale” • And Claudia Cardinale • Also starred in Fellini’s “8 ½” • Released in 1963 • Tagline was “A Madcap Frolic Of Crime and Fun” as well as “You Only Live Once, so see the Pink Panther twice!

  3. #62 on Bravo’s 100 Funniest Movies • Cardinale couldn’t speak English, and all her lines were dubbed. • Originally intended to create a series of films for the Phantom character. • Clouseau originally offered to Peter Ustinov • Ustinov dropped out right before shooting. Edwards sued him and won. • Sequel is “A Shot In The Dark”, only was intended to feature Clouseau • This is the only Pink Panther that doesn’t star Herbert Lom, Burt Kwouk, or Graham Stark.

  4. Sequel was released only three months after The Pink Panther was finished. • Ava Gardner orignally offered the role of Madame Clouseau • Audrey Hepburn suggested Capucine to Edwards for the role of Madame Clouseau. • Animated Pink Panther got a series of animated shorts after this film. • Later films Clouseau was a bumbling fool in this film he is merely a fool in love. • Structured as a classic farce • The actual diamond doesn’t come into play until close to the end of the film.

  5. This film has one of the industries greatest slow builds. • The film does the opposite of what classic “cop and robber” comedies do, making each moment more comical. • To lose weight for this role, Sellers took dieting pills for a year. • In the bath scene an industrial strength foaming agent was used. • It burned the actors skin, and Wagner became blind for four weeks. • The Pink Panther idea was chosen by Edwards from hundreds of sketches.

  6. Sequel based on Harold Kurnitz’ play. • Edwards tweaked the play to fit the Clouseau character • Pink Panther became a parody of Bond. • The film has been criticized with: • “Wall-to-wall exposition” • “Ramrod-straight actors negotiating the screen as table-hockey effigies”
