  1. Thursday 15th September, 2016 Welcome to Wilmslow High School Sixth Form!

  2. What’s special about 16+?

  3. What’s special about success?

  4. Sixth Form Team - Introductions: • Mrs Flannery – sixth form secretary (Pavilion reception) • Miss Evetts – student manager for Year 12 • Mrs Finemore-Lunn – student manager for Year 13 • Mrs Cook – head of post 16 guidance (UCAS) • Mr Lightfoot – leader sixth form expectations and guidance (BTEC Sport lead) • Mr Tunmore – director of sixth form

  5. Sixth Form Culture and Ethos

  6. It’s an exciting and challenging time… Think hard. Work hard. Learn from any mistakes.

  7. 1. Success is earned. Talent is not enough. • Success is going to take time. It’s the hard hours that you put in that most people don’t see that will make a difference. • You need to make the most of your teachers and their time. They are there for you! • Don’t concern yourself with the grades that other students are achieving. Target your own personal bests every time.

  8. 2. High quality practice and attitude underpin top performance. • See all lessons and tests as important • Get the feedback that you need to improve; clarify points that you’re uncertain of • Treat mock exams as the ‘real thing’ • Make the most of those extra opportunities like study clinics and ‘exam Thursdays’

  9. 3. Seek out errors and weaknesses of all kinds and turn them into strengths. • You’re human. You’ll make mistakes. We all do. • Be honest with yourself. • Talk to us. We’re here to support and help you.

  10. Barriers to Learning • Poor attendance • Procrastination and poor self-discipline • Lack of commitment to independent study(15 hours per week) • Part-time jobs • Lack of communication with us

  11. Sixth Form Curriculum

  12. Personalised timetables • Formal study = qualification hours. For a student studying 4 A-levels or the BTEC Sport course, that would be 26 out of 30 periods in a week.

  19. BTEC – National Diploma • For students following the BTEC in Sport, the programme is organised over a series of units covered during the 2 years • Students must pass all of their Year 12 units to progress into Year 13 • As a qualification, the BTEC course we offer is the equivalent of 3 A-levels • Your point of contact for the BTEC course is Mr Lightfoot

  20. A-Level Reform: • Some subjects have adopted the new linear specifications • This would mean that examinations counting towards the qualification would come at the end of the course • Students can still enter for an AS exam if they are not continuing the subject at A2 • The school may enter a student for an AS exam if they are concerned with their progress in this subject • Decisions about entries will be made in February

  21. Subjects with linear arrangements: • Art and Design • Business Studies • Computer science • Drama and theatre • Economics • English Language and English Literature • Geography • History • All modern foreign languages • Music • PE • Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) • Psychology • Sociology

  22. Subjects not on linear arrangements: • Mathematics • Further mathematics • Design and technology subjects • Government and politics • Law • Media studies • Music technology • Philosophy For all of these subjects, students will be entered for examinations at the end of Year12 and the results will count towards the final qualification.

  23. How do we track the progress of your son or daughter in the sixth form?

  24. Target Setting - ALPS • Based upon the GCSE points score • Gives each student a target grade • Based upon the top 10% of what students have gone on to achieve against DfE national dataset (aspirational) • Can be adjusted

  30. What can parents and carers do? • Research – Unifrog and www.ucas.com • Sign up to the monthly UCAS Parents Newsletter • Ensure we have your correct email address to receive the weekly sixth form bulletin. Encourage your son or daughter to keep up-to-date with information from it and to engage with opportunities offered. • Make sure your son or daughter signs up for a UCAS Card – they’ll get monthly emails • Download the UCAS Parent Guide from the UCAS website • Offer to attend open days with them • Try to remain impartial – decisions should be theirs • Learn from others – student videos are available to watch at UCAS.tv • Encourage your son or daughter to use their personalised timetable to gain useful work experience • Encourage extra reading to support and extend learning • Support your son or daughter’s management of their application • Make sure they read everything they are sent very carefully! • Encourage a sense of responsibility. Everything they do this year matters and has an impact on where they will be after leaving Wilmslow High School.
