  1. Three Tips for Being a Great Tutor Mario Booker

  2. Mario Booker is a fifth-grade teacher working at Longwood Charter Schools in Chicago. Booker has worked for fourteen years as a teacher within Chicago public and private schools and has his eyes set on becoming a school administrator. Booker also volunteers as a tutor for SEAM360 and the Sylvan Learning Center in Chicago. He loves helping children build the skills they will need to be successful in their lives and their future careers. Here are three tips he has learned to be a great tutor for children:

  3. Be honest. Mario Booker knows from being a father that he can’t always give children the full answers to things they want to know, but as a father, a teacher, and a tutor, he understands the importance of telling the truth to children. Once a student distrusts a tutor, teacher, or parent, they will have trouble trusting them again and have trouble trusting anyone. Honesty is the best policy. • Be flexible. Sometimes sticking to a particular lesson plan isn’t the best way to help a particular student learn. As a tutor, you have a responsibility to one student at a time, usually, so you must be flexible in your teaching style and material to fit each student’s needs.

  4. Be patient. Some students take longer than others to grasp lessons and understand your teachings. Patience is a huge virtue in this context. Students will disengage quickly if they feel they can’t ever learn something or develop a particular skill.

  5. Mario Booker has helped many children develop the skills they need to be successful in life in the classroom and as a tutor.
