  1. Some of the rights in the Bill of Rights and in the original Constitution, were in response to the grievances in the Declaration of Independence.

  2. Civil War (Reconstruction) Amendments • Amendment 13 – abolished slavery • Amendment 14 – protects citizens against actions of the state governments (intended to help ex-slaves) • Due process • Equal protection • Amendment 15 – voting cannot be denied because of race

  3. Required Responsibilities • Obey the laws • Accept responsibility for own behavior • Pay taxes • Serve on a jury • Testify in court • Attend school • Serving in the armed forces if called
