5. Ancient Roots Setting the Stage for the Essential Question: What is Culture? An essential question is the heart of the curriculum. The essential question points to the essence of what students will examine in the course of their study. An essential question sets the stage for interdisciplinary curriculum planning and exploration. Each core classroom will begin this journey towards the essential question by building community, assessing skills, and creating shared experiences.

Applied Math and Science What does a lab class look like? • Opening This might be a problem to solve, a game, a long term observation, or Read Aloud. • Exploration This might include a lab, shared readings, fact finding missions,… • Discussion Students will regularly meet in the “Think Tank” to connect the hands-on experiences to the big idea and inquiry question, to review terms, and ask new questions. • Clean Up

At Home Reading • Your child needs to read daily for 20 minutes-ish. • When this habit is established these are the reading behaviors I see very clearly in the classroom: • Students that can relax and fall into a book • Students that can start and finish a book • Students that can pick out a “just right” book • Students who really think about abandoning a book • Students that can focus for extended time • Students that are really excited about what they are reading and are eager to share • A love for language • Students reading to learn

26. Friday Folders • Folders will come home each Friday full of papers that either need to stay at home or be brought back to school. • The folders can be returned on Monday for safe keeping and will be refilled by the end of the week. 
