  2. Mackay Scanland MA TESOL Portfolio LO #2: Demonstrated ability to reflect upon and apply the experience of learning a foreign language to one’s teaching of English. TESL505 Learner Profile • Description • This artifact contains my learner profile created in Dr. Gena Bennett’s TESL 505- Second Language • Acquisition class created in fall 2012. It is about my learning a second language and reflects my learning • Spanish as a second language and how I will apply this to my future as an EFL teacher. The paper delves • into the learner’s motivations and the degree of anxiety during the learning process. It demonstrates my • empathy for other cultures and the challenges learners face in acquiring an L2. • Reflection • Being able to be a student of an L2, my learning an L2 has given me a new perspective of what my student face when it comes to difficulties in language acquisition. I found that I am a visual and kinesthetic learner and have the ability to become aware of stresses and affects of learner’s tasks. This has made me a better teacher because of my understanding of the learning model. The competency gained is evidenced in my motivation to teach and help students achieve their goals. My experience was amazing while learning a foreign language and feel more to able apply the experience of learning a foreign language to teaching English. • Application • From my learning a second language, I’m able to utilize skills the professor used in class and apply those new perspectives with my students. One element is by identifying specific learners motivations in my classroom. One method I will use is engaging them in activities during the course of a day that would help activate their prior knowledge. I would ask: "What do we already know, or think that we know, about today's topic? In my classroom students will be able to identify key concepts and understand relationships between those concepts. 3. Mackay Scanland MA TESOL Portfolio LO #3: Demonstrated ability to analyze their own and other cultural systems and how this affects the teaching of English. TESL530 Ethnographic Paper • Description • This artifact is an Ethnographic Paper that was written for Dr. Gregory L. Bock’s TESL 530 Intercultural Communication and Language class in spring 2013. A series of questions was asked in order to delineate the difficulties brought about by language barriers. It contains a visit to Little Saigon and demonstrates my ability to analyze and interact with a U.S. subculture. My personal involvement within the culture provides a detailed analysis of the Vietnamese culture and it’s assimilation into an American society. • Reflection • I still think about my interview with Nancy and my day spent in the Vietnamese area of Southern California. The ability to immerse myself into a cultural system other than my own gave me new sensitivity into this culture. Driving through “Little Saigon” gave me new ideas about how difficulties in communication can cause interference within a society. I found the way we use communication can be interpreted as being bias and could hinder the learning process. This project gave me new ideas about our learners so we can help explain complicated ideas or concepts and better understand their learning an L2. • Application • My application is very subjective in that I found I will be more alert to the learners past educational • experiences. My classroom will implement strategies for students to understand language barriers associated • within their own culture. I will teach my learners foundations that include knowing what’s expected of them • in the new L2 culture that includes structure and rules in the new learning environment. Students bring their • own method and routines into their new learning environment. I will model and establish procedures via • rubrics that they are expected to understand and follow in my classroom. Mackay Scanland MA TESOL Portfolio 10/31/13

  4. Mackay Scanland MA TESOL Portfolio LO #5: Demonstrated ability to interact with Christian views of language learners and the nature of language. TESL530 Self Reflection Report • Description • With communication being the nature of language, this paper is an analysis written in Dr. Gregory Bock’s TESL530 Intercultural Communication and Language class spring 2013. The paper discusses my faith as a Christian educator, and the responsibility to my students. This interaction of Christian principles in the classroom creates a comfortable learning environment. The paper explains basic principles of learning and how these skills can be used cross-culturally. This will have a positive effect on a students’ motivation, as well as relationships between students and teachers. • Reflection • During this course, I found myself with a renewed Christian view of learning and how to better incorporate this into my classroom. My report discusses how having a Christian perspective has grown to include language learners and how God has empowered me to give the gift of teaching. I found that I could help students by taking this new perspective. While reflecting on this I remembered how Jesus was also a teacher. I have found now through experiences that watching out for cultural stereotyping in a classroom is everyone’s responsibility. I’ve learned to respect and appreciate these differences in a multi-cultural world. Having the understanding of relationships between language and culture gave me many connections I can use in my teaching ESL. • Application • My Christian principles in the classroom are to create a comfortable learning environment, where my students will develop the skills to analyze the world around them, while respecting the differences and opinions of others. My Christian view of teaching and having a Christian perspective in my classroom will include a non-biased ethical approach. My philosophy is to always allow a constant conversation between students and teacher that create a positive partnership. I will ensure that different backgrounds and cultures are always mutually respected. Mackay Scanland MA TESOL Portfolio 10/31/13

  5. Mackay Scanland MA TESOL Portfolio LO #8: Demonstrated ability, through anticipated or actual teaching, to apply the principles of classroom language pedagogy to teach both oral and written English. TESL557 Pronunciation Video: TESL550 Sort Story module • Description • The pronunciation Video that was filmed for Prof. Manar Metry and Dr. Tasha Bleistein in TESL 557 Reflective Teaching class in spring 2013. This class was taught at Azusa High School and was made up of adults ages 18-60, and reflects my ability to teach ESL. (b) This module was written in TESL 550 Second Language Pedagogy II with Dr. Gena Bennett in spring 2013. It is filled with activities and example exercises that have the student being a purposeful active participant in learning a second language. • Reflection • This teaching project gave me the opportunity to visualize myself as teacher. My teaching interaction expanded my teaching skills base throughout the reflective teaching course. The video project helped me improve my critical thinking while visually evaluating myself. I also connected with putting myself in another’s shoes through the short story module. With different sequences of interaction, I was able to find different ways to effectively teach students, and was able to have brainstorm sessions with my mentor, which gave me new ideas to help my students in their acquisition of English. My experience has helped me think about how to generate new ideas and incorporate them in to the learning process. • Application • Week to week I will use tests that assess weekly activities. The process will include having students acquire their L2 through creativity and critical thinking. My execution of teaching is to effectively teach students by establishing activities in the classroom. I will model their daily tasks and activities. As a teacher I will focus on student-centered learning objectives using an array of strategies, such as technology, worksheets, and lesson plans. I will plan my lessons well in advance to ensure I am prepared for the task. Mackay Scanland MA TESOL Portfolio 10/31/13

  6. Mackay Scanland MA TESOL Portfolio LO #11: Demonstrated ability to use various classroom research procedures. TESL557 Observation Report • Description • This is an observation report I did for TESL 557 Reflective Teaching with Professor Manar Metry and Dr. Tasha Bleistein in spring 2103. Written at Azusa High School, APU students were used as student teachers. The report is an unbiased written account of one of the lessons. (b) is a reflective teaching report I wrote on spring 2013 while teaching at Azusa High School with Prof. Tasha Bleistein in a classroom setting. This artifact reflects my enhancement and ability with alternative ways to grasp research concepts in a classroom. • Reflection • The way one teaches through the eyes of another can be an invaluable asset. I felt the feedback I received for the assignment would benefit me in future classrooms. The concepts learned have helped me achieve a higher level of teaching ESL. My execution of teaching along with watching the interactivity between students and another teaching helped me find where I could improve on various methods of teaching. I developed my abilities and found enjoyable ways to brainstorm and discuss concepts with my mentor. I will implement these within my teaching projects. • Application • My teaching procedures will include monitoring each student using learning logs and portfolios to help solve language problems. This includes taking samples from various students and identifying key aspects where they are having problems such as verb usage, and create assessments that raise their awareness to these issues. Using a portfolio for students will journal mistakes that will help me better understand how they are progressing in their studies. I will use current strategies to help students move from assisted to unassisted success in learning English. TESL557 Reflective Teaching Report Mackay Scanland MA TESOL Portfolio 10/31/13
