  1. Interesting Integers!

  2. Integers Integers are the counting numbers, their opposites, and zero. • It is important to read positive and negative integers correctly.

  3. Use a number line to show positive and negative integers! Numbers that are the same distance from 0 are called opposites. -5 and 5 are opposites.

  4. Absolute Value The absolute value of an integer is its distance from zero. Since distance is positive, the absolute value of either a positive or a negative integer is positive. The absolute value of 5 is written l5l. On the number line above, both 5 and -5 are 5 units from 0. So, l5l = 5 and l-5l = 5.

  5. Integers in the Real World A number line is like a thermometer.

  6. Integers in the Real World Meteorologists use integers to describe temperatures.

  7. Integers in the Real World! You can use negative numbers to show elevation!

  8. Integers in the Real World Integers are used when managing your money! When you owe more money than you have, you are dealing with negative integers! Credit cards – not free money - it’s borrowed money from a bank. You owe this money! Debit cards – you are only allowed to take out money you already have in your own bank account.

  9. Credit CardsWhen you use a credit card, you are borrowing money from a bank that issues the credit card. A credit card statement is sent to you to let you know how much you owe – if you don’t pay the full amount when you get the statement, the bank charges you a % interest fee so you actually owe even more money!

  10. Bank statements show credits (deposits) and debits (money withdrawn).

  11. On a bank statement, if you take out too much money, you overdraw your account. This is when you have insufficient funds and usually have to pay fees – example below shows fees of $30 for each time (total $150) charged due to withdrawing from insufficient funds!

  12. Comparing and Ordering Integers When comparing two integers on a number line, the integer that is farther to the right is greater and the integer that is farther to the left is less!

  13. Comparing and Ordering Integers

  14. Comparing and Ordering Rational Numbers

  15. Rational Numbers What is a rational number? A rational number is any number that can be written as a quotient b/a , where a and b are integers and b ≠ 0.

  16. Graphing Ordered Pairs What is a coordinate plane? Based on the definition above and your prior knowledge, draw a quick model of what you think a coordinate plane looks like on your own white board!
