  1. Day 20 Seeing through Politicians

  2. Politicians • Motivations • Power • Money • Goals • Get re-elected • Advance vested interests • Tactics • Sound bites • Catchphrases • Oversimplifications

  3. Politicians and Statesmen All Politicians claim to be Statesmen. Key differences • Politicians pursue power to advance their vested interests and the interests of the groups that fund them. • Statesmen genuinely seek what is in the public interest. They are willing to state unpopular views and stand up against powerful groups and interests.

  4. “Flip Flopping” Politicians reflect dominant belief systems and reigning ideologies within the culture. When the popular belief changes, or they move up to represent a larger area, a politician’s stand on an issue will change to what is most likely to get him elected. Typical Flip flopping issues include: • Gun Control • Abortion • Gay Military Service / marriage • War Support

  5. Things to look out for • Stating “truths” without providing evidence • Appealing to emotions • Generalizing whole groups • Repeating the same talking points • Avoiding questions

  6. Things to do • Fact check from alternative sources • Look at major contributors • Find out their political history • Look at their actual voting record • Don’t believe a word they say

  7. Politician & Lie Detector
