Pros/cons Pros Cons From first submission to funding can take 18 – 24 mo, so requires planning and milestone timing revision Easier for (typically 5-year) NP students than 4-year students If funding runs longer than planned matriculation, must extend stay Proposal is no longer de-facto first draft of dissertation (more back end writing needed) • Efficient, succinct research proposal • May qualify for funding, reducing department training cost • Experience with NIH grant submissions

Issues • Dissertation proposal before quals? • Can we possibly get these submitted in Dec of Y02? • Can we speed up the Masters to achieve this? • Med/Health and Peds willing to stay 5 years pre-internship? • If NRSA is late funded, students must stay into Y06, and then we have a new funding gap
