So blind people can hate them, too. • Stereotypes • Work in gas stations, Lustful Indian Man, Dirty and Slummy, Violent, Muslim, Highly Intelligent • Derogatory names • Slurpee Jockey, Apu, Babar, Button-head, Cow-kisser, Curry-muncher, Elephant Jockey, Etch, Gas-pumper, Higger, Sambo, Spice-rubber, Taxi driver, Thank You Come Again, and Turbinator

  7. Accidental Oppression? • One of the four of the Indiana Jones movies Indians Jones and the Temple of Doom is set in India. The film was made in 1984 and effectively shaped much of Americans' beliefs about India throughout the 80s. Young Americans believed that India was indeed a place where monkey brains made dinner, and eye-balls were to be found in soup. Tourists hesitated from visiting India. Diaspora Indians all over the world have been traumatized by the representations of India in this movie and are tired of answering anxious questions posed by their closest friends and colleagues.

  8. Oppression • Loss of expression • The dances, which used to be traditional and religious, have now become just for entertainment. • "A woman's beauty is multiplied 1,000 times when she wears a bindi.” -Hindu Proverb • Religion- got them when visiting the temple • Social- like our wedding bands • Preserves the family honor and welfare • Now just a fashion accessory change in color and shape

  14. Acculturation of Dance • Bollywood has taken decades to evolve and continues to evolve over time with inspiration from the addition of diverse dance forms and techniques; it has several different forms of dance encased into one. Because of Bollywood’s constant change, it has been encouraged by all who flock to it. Bollywood and India dance have had a western influence which some could say would be associated with the acculturation because the dominant class in the U.S. are the Americans.

  15. Acculturation of the Indian People • Acculturation for the younger generation of Asian Indian Children has shown to be hard as they struggle for identity formation and societal views on their country. They hold more managerial positions than any other ethnic group.
