  1. Civ & Lit or English 9/Civilizations Choices for the 9th grade: English and Social Studies

  2. Choices for 9th Grade • Students can choice to take a 2 credit course, Civilizations and Literature OR • Separate 1 credit courses in both English and Social Studies, English 9 and Civilizations

  3. How are the choices alike? • The same curriculum – 9th grade English and 9th grade social studies • Both focus on reading, writing, and research skills; both are taught in a thematic manner, rather than a chronological one • Students read many of the same texts • Students learn skills that will help them in future years • Students use 21st Century learning tools

  4. Civilizations & Literature Summary • Same curriculum as English 9 and Civilizations • Material presented together in both English and Social Studies • Ex. When reading Animal Farm in English, students are studying the Russian Revolution in social studies. • Classes meet back to back periods • Single grade given in both classes (2 credits)

  5. English 9 and Civilizations Summary • Same curriculum as Civilizations & Literature • Material covered independently in English and Social Studies classes • Students still study the Russian Revolution and Animal Farm, but during different times of the year. • Classes are scheduled independently of one another • Different grades in each class (1 credit each)

  6. Social Studies Electives • 9th graders also have the option of taking one or both of the following electives in the social studies: • Introduction to Psychology (9-12) • China and the Eastern World (9-12)

  7. English Electives • 9th graders also have the option of taking the following elective in English: • Publications – yearbook
