  1. Meiosis Ch 10.1

  2. Meiosis • Cheese: Me so sexy, and all about the “GAME”tes

  3. Meiosis • Goes thru PMAT two times!

  4. Gametes = AKA - egg and sperm cells • Contain half the total number of chromosomes a cell should have. • Ex - Humans = 46 normally, therefore gametes have only 23. This is called HAPLOID! (HALF)

  5. Gametes • Each gamete produced will be different from the others! • This enables better survival of the species and genetic variety!

  6. Meiosis I Prophase I – the Homologous chrom. pair (same chromo number from each parent) and exchange info. which is called CROSSING-OVER. This will make each gamete unique and therefore passes different traits to different individuals.

  7. Meiosis I • MetaphaseI The homologous Chromosomes line up side by side (pairs) instead in a row down the middle. This will cut your chromosome # in half – from 46-23!

  8. Nondisjunction • When two homologous Chromosomes do not Separate The gamete will result in: An extra chromosome Or A missing chromosome

  9. Nondisjunction Effects • Resulting baby could have an extra chromosomes at #21 which is the cause of Down Syndrome!

  10. Overview:Meiosis vs. Mitosis

  11. Overview • Mitosis “my Toe” is bleeding and needs more cells 2 cells Diploid (46) Each identical • Meiosis “me so sexy” 4 cells haploid Each different
