  1. Molarity

  2. Molarity is… The measure of the strength of a solution • Strong solution = high molarity • Weak solution = low molarity

  3. Creating a Solution • Solutions have 2 parts: • Solute = what gets mixed in • Solvent = what does the dissolving (typically water) ** Must be extremely accurate when measuring**

  4. How to make a Molar Solution Molarity = # of moles of solute liters of solution Example: make a 1M solution of using KBr • 1 mole of KBr 1 L of water • Convert 1 mole of KBr to grams of KBR (K=39.10 + Br=79.90  119.00 grams) • Weigh 119.00 grams of KBr, mix with 1 L of water • Shake until dissolved

  5. Something to make you think • To make a .5 M solution, what would you do? • Answer = .5 moles x 1 mole FW • Mix into 1 L of water

  6. Something to make you think • You want a 1 M solution, but you only need 500 mL? • Answer = divide all numbers by 2

  7. Molality Molality = #moles of solute Kg of solution Molarity is affected by temperature Molality is not affected by temperature
