What do we know? • 90% of students ages 12-17 use the Internet • 75% of them participate in social networks • 29% of teachers use social networking for instruction • 15% of teachers find value in social media • Why we struggle: • 52% of schools prohibit any use of social networking on campus • 69% of school prohibit any use of cell phones

  6. Why Do We Care? • Realities • Social Media is not going away • When Kids are engaged they learn better • Safe Social Media Tools are Available and for free • Replace Online procrastination with social education • Social Media encourages collaboration instead of cliques

  7. What does this mean for our students? Benefits for Students • Develops 21st century skills • Fosters a positive attitude towards the use of technology • Allows for sharing of information • Keeps students updated • Gives a quick instant access to their classroom updates • Teaches them responsibility • Engages students, which helps them learn better • Encourages collaboration and team work for students • Fosters communicative skills and develops inter-personal relationships • Develops critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and global participation

Benefits social networking offers for teachers and educators • Helps teachers huddle professionally • Provides them with their own " voice " • Encourages collaboration • Allows for sharing • Exposes teachers to the possibilities offered by web 2.0 technologies • Develops a solid life-long learning policy • Allows for sharing experiences, collaborating, researching and updating ones knowledge • Can be a vehicle for world peace and inter-cultural understanding through the promotion of cross-cultural dialogue. • Helps teachers stay engaged in education
